Terribly sad news. RIP Merve, you were one of the true greats.

Despite being English my earliest Rugby memories are of that great Welsh team of the 70's....Mervin Davies ,Gareth Edwards and JPR being the ones that really caught this schoolboys imagination. Probably helped because my Rugby teacher was Welsh!
What a player and what an inspiration to a budding back row forward he was.

Doesnt matter about being English, we are allowed to claim him...Merv is a Lions legend, unites us all.
Bring a bit of a Celtic mongrel I can claim a little bit of Merv even without his Lions heroics...my maternal grandparents were Welsh and my Dad was Irish....born and bought up under the flag of St George though! 30 mins very well spent

Fantastic stuff! An outstanding man and an outstanding player. A giant on and off the field.
It was desperately sad that his injury cut short his career. It was extremely fortunate that sufficiently specialist medical attention was to hand immediately on the pitch without which Mervyn would have died on the spot.
A remarkable story of a giant in Rugby, on and off the pitch.
His recovery from what must have been a shattering blow was exemplary.
Mervyn relearned living over time and that in itself is another tribute to the man.
What a character! What a player! What a life! What a man!
Few men are touched with greatness. Mervyn had it by the bucket load.
We will not see the like again. RIP Mervyn.
Our thoughts must now be for his family.

In that footage at about 30mins, at the very end of the Lions '74 footage as the players run from the pitch, a fan stumbles headlong into the back of (I think) Gareth Edwards' legs knocking him over. Edwards responds by turning round and ttting him, twice for good measure. Would get you banned for life now, I don't think anybody even noticed
Lions 74?There was a history there
