At my desk at lunch time and I just checked out my regular lakes site and it got me thinking about my fishing escapades! Looking forward to getting the gear back down from the winter hibernation known as the loft. I am based in Essex and would appreciate any recommendations for lakes, I mainly go to Furnace Lakes in Horsham, Sussex. If anyone else goes there i'd like to hear your tales!

No need to give up for the winter - maybe not ideal for carping, but I've had a couple of days out with the fly rod this week, rainbow trout at a small stillwater and grayling in a little river. Prime time for chub and big roach, pike and perch still active. Looking forward to the spring tench fishing, though.

I had my last fly session September, am really crap at casting! Tried a DVD by Hywel Morgan who makes it look easy but I did stuggle. This was on a resevoir in Powys Wales with no takes unfortunatley!

How do you find fitting your gear into the Elise?!

Elphicks in Kent is always a good winter water - if you can get on.

I did a three nighter there last November and had a 53lb Mirror, 38lb Common plus 9 others over 25lb.

Also Sandhurst has great winter pedigree and not too far from you.

You need somewhere that gets fished regularly - and where the bait is going in constantly - so busy day ticket waters rather than huge rarely fished pits are the way forward. Also somewhere fairly shallow as they respond much better to small rises in temperature and SW winds.

53 lb Mirror! That would make my year if I got that. I'd be happy with my first 20 lb to be honest. Not the most successful fisherman you'd ever meet but may sound daft that I find theres more to it than catching. Just enjoy being in the middle of no where and getting sonme fresh air.

What was this beast caught on if you dont mind me asking?

I did a little write up for the bait company's gear I was using.
You can have a read here http://carpbait-uk.com/articles/sessionofalifetime...

I've been at it for 20 odd years now - happy to answer any questions you might have...

A little bit of tuition makes a hell of a difference, but then it's just practice. I'm not great myself, I'm reasonably accurate at short range with the little river rod, but I'm not brilliant at distance with the heavy rod - can just about put out a full line with the wind in the right direction, but some people do that with ease.

That's the nice thing about fly fishing - less kit, short three and four piece rods:

And it has a built in rod rest for setting up:

smile

I've got a little four piece Sonik spinning rod as well, so I sometimes take the Elise lure fishing too. I can just about fit my match rod in the passenger seat, but most of my other rods are two piece 12 footers and just don't fit. Obviously a weekend session bivvied up is out of the question - for that, I have this beast wink

Haha I had no idea the boot of an Elise could acommodate a rod of any size! What a perfect Sunday, spirited drive through the valley then bring home some rainbow trout!

My car is terrible for carrying weekend carp kit as the seats don't fold down, so can only realistically go alone! Mad when you imagine it's basically a four dour saloon. In fact I get it all in the other halfs diesel fiesta with just enough room for the sat nav!

My kit is pretty basi for fly fishing as I know I'll only really use it twice a year so I bought a begginers kit for £50 which had it all in there. I have spent hours just practicing my casting on the lawn but for some reason when I hit the resevoir it goes to pot! You're right I need to get instruction from someone!

Only just spotted this thread. You should try fitting gear into a Caterham...

I used to work for Hardy Brothers quite a few years ago and we offered casting lessons in Highgate ponds. If you feel so inclined I'd be happy to show you a few tricks smile

Herts, not far from Hertford.

Looking a little windy right now for casting practice but I'm sure we could find a sympathetic pub with a large beer garden when the weather improves smile

Fantastic, I am in Essex so if you have a local water you regularly attend I would appreciate that. Let us know prices etc and if I need any further equipment as I have just a basic kit at present.

Nice! A week fishing in France - nothing better.
I did my first French trip last year after 20 odd years carp fishing - and having done a uk 50 I'd pretty much caught as big over here as I could.

Did a week at La Horre - magical, blissful, beautiful. Delivered everything I could have wished for an exceeded my expectations even after a 20 year wait.

Be lucky - and enjoy it whatever comes along!

How do these trips work? Do you go as a group or take your own motor with all your gear?

France does seem to be the Mecca! My boss just showed me acpic of his mate at the Ebro in Spaim and a 186lb albino catfish. What a catch!
