Well actually a "fan" attacks the opposition (AZ Alkmaar) keeper, the keeper gives him a good kicking, the ref sends the keeper off and then the match is abandoned as the AZ side walks off in disgust.

The keeper deserves a medal, just like the ledendary "big man" of Scottish train fame!

I just watched the video, fair play to the lad.

No doubt in the same manner as happened to the hero of Scottish public transport, he too will be prosecuted and locked away for years and years as he presents such a risk to society. The scrote that kicked it all off though, will no doubt get compo.

I believe this is in process already.

Personally I think he deserved to be sent off, The first kick was totally expectable but to continue to kick him when he was on the ground was not.

I am not saying the guy didn’t deserve it but as a professional sportsman he should have just backed away and let the guy get tackled and taken away. If he had done the same to another player he would have been sent off.
Because another player would be charging at him from behind trying to attack him, slight difference.

I think it was fair enough.

He kicked him a couple of times to ensure the attacker was subdued and help had also just arrived. Then it all stopped.

I'm all for fighting fire with fire in these situations but then it must stop once you realise the other party has been subdued.

Ok one kick seemed a bit retalitary, however I still think the keeper was within his rights to do so due to the manner and speed it all happened.

The keeper sees someone who is not a player running at him and attempt a drop kick in the middle of a game. This happens in front of 50000+ people and TV cameras. If I was the keeper I would assume the bloke was an absolute lunatic and if it was me I would perhaps keep kicking him until some sort of security arrived.

I thought the player went too far, probably understandable as he had been attacked, but he went to rather than away from the attacker after the guy was down with the intent to kick him again, which he did.

The keeper probably deserved to get some sort of investigation from the local FA about whether he did the right thing.

But, from a refereeing point of view.
The incident happened off the ball, did not involve any other players, had no impact on the game and was way outside the scope of the rules of the game.

The ref should have just made sure the civilian was off the pitch, checked that the keeper was in a fit state to carry on, give everyone a moment to chill out, then carry on the game.

It's not for the ref to make judgements about that sort of thing.
He's there to deal with the game and keep the game moving, not deal with the aftermath of pitch invaders.

If the FA banned or fined the keeper aftwerwards that's a different matter.

Comes down to reasonable force doesn't it.......I think he wanted to keep the nutter on the floor because anyone who runs on to a pitch and attacks a player has to be considered just that, a nutter, who knows what he's going to do.

The Ref was out of order and I'm glad the team walked off, if I was attacked at work I'd probably fk off home too.

If as a fan, you enter the field of play, with the intention of accosting a player, you are fair game IMHO.

He got off lightly.

Oh, and the red card was a farce. Sent off for defending yourself against attack from a deranged fan. The keeper didn't instigate it!

Some referee's really don't have clue.

I would have thought his punishment by the ref/authority would be to do with bringing the game into disrepute and upsetting sponsors etc.

Dutch FA have ordered a replay behind closed doors. Red card for keeper rescinded and hooligan probably up on a serious charge. All's well that ends well!

Let's not forget some of the Dutch fans are complete nutters, the away fans are encased in plastic or some sort of plexiglass to keep them from throwing or being hit by missiles, it's a mad place to watch footy.

There are indeed idiots everywhere. Its fair to say a UK football ground is generally a safer place than a Dutch one these days.

By way of an update, the hooligan got sent down today for four months with an additional two suspended, which is less that the prosecuter wanted, but still a clear message not to be a Richard.
[in Dutch, sorry]
