(Not sure if it's a sport actually but would guess so?!)

Come on then - who else had one of these?!

Me and a few of my mates had these back in the early 90s.

There was only one to be had back then - the Barnett Black Widdow!

I had another one too - a big smaller without a wrist guard, think the shop threw it in for free when i bought the Black Widdow - think it was called a Striker or something like that?

Used to have some great times when we were early teens firing at tin cans and yoghurt pots.

Might have to have a root round my parents garage for it - sure the elastic will be perishing by now though.

Not much to say i suppose! Not like golf where thousands can be spent - these were about £8 back then and probably aren't much more now!

They were one of those things that we all seemed to have.

I think we all secretly wanted an air-rifle but being 9, this was the closest we could get. All completely innocent and harm-less - apart from the odd grazed wrist.

I think slingshot is the word, rather than catapult though. A catapult is something Bart Simpson has!

Similar to me, really. As for catapult vs slingshot, never thought about it!

What are they actually for, apart from breaking windows and running away?

Another one who had a black widow catapult here. The one to have at the time if my memory is correct was a Pro Diablo.

Many happy memories of firing those little ball bearings.

I had a Black Widow and a Cobra, pretty sure I still have them somewhere. Used to used marbles, or stones when I ran out of pocket money. Got pretty good with it for a while too. Then I discovered crossbows.

The Black Widow without the wrist guard was the 'Strike 9' - I still have mine somewhere.

I bought mine from a shop in the Clarence Arcade in Ashton-under-Lyne when I was about 12 years old. I remember it well - they couldn't give a flying f**k how old the kids were they sold weapons to. We were little f**kers with them too! A lad who lived next door but two to me (he was 3 years younger so would have been at primary school bought this bad boy without any problem!

Had blackwidow as a kid, despite now being 33 I got a new blackwidow last year from a camping shop, use it for something fun to do when camping out the back and beyond of mid/north wales with mates. Good fun, stick up some empty cans, select some decent pebbles from riverbank and hey presto!

Yep

I had a black widow and then when I saw the cobra I bought that.

We had loads of rats so me and a mate would attempt to shoot them with my catapult and a big lamp, never did get one. Shot a pigeon with it though. Very powerful, and with the bull bearings they supplied there's not many things that it wouldn't leave a hole in. I remember shooting a bull bearing straight through a road sign, which shows how powerful they are.
