Good....in a way.

He's amazing and has been wonderfull for English rugby. He has saved the team on so many occasions when the team was not worthy of winning.

I hope that the selectors will now build a team, instead of a support act for one of the finest players and kickers ever.

Awesome player, thanks Johnny, lets hope we get a team that can manage what you usually achieved alone.

The best ambassador the sport has had. A gentleman of fine character and finer temperament, a permanent inspiration for present and future generations.

Thank you.

The consumate professional, never the same after 2003 unfortuantely. Until then he was the best pound for pound tackler in world rugby together with all his other tributes.

I suppose the ultimate compliment is that he is the player that all the other teams feared.

Writing as someone lucky enough to have been sitting in the stands on a very wet Sydney night on 22 November 2003 thanks for giving me a life time sporting memory.

Very glad he's chosen to retire and do it on his terms.

What a fking team! I think I understand the Welsh now when they look back and marvel/cry at who they could put on the field compared to their offerings in recent times. With the benefit of 8yrs hindsight we can now look back at that team and realise how genuinely brilliant it truely was. An absolute once in a generation team or even 2 generation team. Is it any wonder then that England vintages of recent years have fallen so far?

Farewell Wilko, you walked with Gods and were as good as it got.

Thanks JW for all the memories esp those magical few weeks in 2003.

As a sports fan and an England fan I've got to accept that might just be as good as it gets in my lifetime. But that's okay because it was just perfect.

Enjoy your retirement and I hope you can stop being so hard on yourself now!

A very sad day for English rugby, but it's probably for the best. As above, I'm glad he chose to retire on his own terms.

Thanks for the never-forgotten memories Johnny, you're an inspirational legend and an absolute icon of the sport.

Ditto - A day I will never forget and a player I hope never will be forgotten. I just asked Santa for his book.

I thought about Greenwood, but decided that we have had better centres. Raging Bull is an unforgivable mistake on my part.

So an All Time Pack...Fitz in between Bull and Leonard or do we replace Big Jase?
Meads, Matfield or Eales alongside Jonno?
Er the back row? Leave as is or do either of Parisse/Michael Jones replace Dally at 8? Does Immanol have a shout at 8? Ritchie M v Richard Hill?

I played against him once when at school (I was pretty crap tbh and didn't play after leaving 6th form)in one of the early rounds of the Daily Mail Cup and got thrashed. On one of our few attacks we had a scrum about ten metres from their line, I was playing No 8, picked up the ball from the base of the scrum and went for the line, only to get absolutely smashed by Jonny and driven back about 10 metres the other way before being taken off injured...

His school team also featured Peter Richards I now learn.

Sad news but inevitable

Of course he'll always be remembered for "that" drop goal as he should but for me my favourite has to be the chip and gather try he scored against the All Blacks in 2002. Just pure class.

And the tackling. Fly halfs shouldn't be able to tackle like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha9RqQmtXUU

No doubt part of the reason why he struggled with injuries together with his insistence of being involved in too many rucks.

I don't think he was the greatest play-maker but he could execute. He always played best to me when he had someone like Catty outside him.

He's what 32 now with 91 caps? However many would he have got if he hadn't been injured for so long?

Enjoy your retirement Jonny I think you've earnt it

You missed out Woodman too; a frightening sight to see bullocking towards you in the loose. That summer 03 test against the Aussies is still one of my favourite ever England performances, the front row that night gave a real lesson in complete rugby.

Shame the rest of the world caught up with us post 03

Who have we had at inside centre that's better than Greenwood ?!?! He scored 31 tries in 55 matches...ran amazing lines and had brilliant hands.

He's the player almost more than any other we've struggled to replace.

Can't agree more - And as for his punditry, superb. His passion for the game is right up there.

I don't think there are many with his enthusiasm and to think he almost went back to work in the city.

How he manages to work with Barnes on Sky is beyond me
