I'm looking to get some clubs for my son for christmas but I'm stuggling with what size to get him. He's 6 years old but quite small (112cm)and according to the info I've found on the web he's a few cm short for the 6-8 year old sets. I could get a 3-5 year old set but he may well have grown out of them by March. My gut says get the bigger size but I'm worried they may be to big and hinder him.

Is it better to have them to short or will he be OK short term with the longer clubs.

Cheers
Paul

Well done for getting him into it when he is young, I know you prob wanna get him a spangly new set as it is christmas but as you pointed out yourself he will grow out of them quickly.
I would buy a second hand set instead, when he outgrows them sell them, buy bigger, when he outgrows them sell them too.
If you insist on going ahead buy the bigger ones as he can go down the grip, clubs that are too small will have him bending over too much affecting his swing.
Ebay is your friend here or even local pro shops as they will have clubs for teaching the juniors and may sell you a cheap set.

Thanks for the advice. I was more worried about the longer clubs affecting his swing but what you said about the short clubs makes perfect sense. I'll start looking through e-bay now.

No problem, again it would be worth calling local pro shops/driving range as they will maybe have some in good condition for sale, dont spend a fortune tho. A pro may even offer to measure him up, buying a lesson or two would be a great idea, as even tho he is young a Pro will give him the important basics right from the beginning. £150 spent on second hand clubs and 2-3 lessons will be a lot better for him than a £200 set.
A half set is also a great idea as it will teach him to utilize the clubs he has got and he will learn better shot-making.
I started at a young age and taught myself hence my shocking grip, tho it seems to work for me now, had I had a couple of lessons to get me up and running I would be off Scratch by now smile

At that age i'd be looking at a 7 iron, wedge, putter and an old cut down 5 or 7 wood

Don't cut down or give him adult clubs - His weight, balance and swing will all suffer...

Junior golf is now a boom business with many places to buy junior clubs.

After losing a couple of e-bay auctions I ended up buying these fro £25 more than the sale price of the second hand e-bay clubs.

Plenty of trips to the range in the new year for me. Which is a shame rolleyes
