I've decided to take the afternoon off and go to the races and meet a few old friends. I don't know anything about horse racing, and I'd be grateful for any tips. I've been before, but it was New Year's day, and I was a bit under the weather.

I could do with a couple of decent horses - I think there's 6 races today, and if anyone knows a bar in the racecourse that is less busy than the ones I found the last time, that would be great too.

TIA

Spot something with a cool name and put a couple o quid on it. Otherwise, back the favourite each way. Small money gets you the buzz of winning without the 'oh fk' of losing money you can't afford

Look for the one that takes a dump on the way to the start line. That way, it'll be lighter and more aerodynamic....

If you are racing horses it will probably be better if you do not drink alcohol beforehand, plenty of steroids/amphetamines washed down with red bull. Oh and plenty of Ellimans?? embrocation for your fetlocks.whistle

You'll find it a lot quieter than New Years/Festival time so wouldn't worry about struggling for grog. Its the favourite I know but had a lump on Cue Card this morning at 6/4 (now 11/8) hopefully the on course will open up at a decent price to get some money in the book but I guess that all depends on how the rest of the card goes for them.

Rest of the card looks like this:

Cheltenham 1.10 ~ Stewards House 8/1
Cheltenham 1.45 ~ Oh Crick ew at 14/1
Cheltenham 2.20 ~ Intac ew at 16/1
Cheltenham 2.55 ~ Absolutlyfantastic ew at 14/1

Betting on NH races should strictly be for fun, at least with flat racing the horses will probably get to the finish line, the odds in NH don't reflect the fact that your horse might not even get that far, let alone win.

You are joking aren't you? Much prefer NH to flat racing. no chance of getting stiffed at the back of the field in a 3m race. Many more mismatches in NH racing to get stuck into.

Financial disaster, albeit a lot of fun! Guinness at £4.30 a pint, the buggers. Thanks for the tips:

Cheltenham 1.10 ~ Stewards House 8/1
Cheltenham 1.45 ~ Oh Crick ew at 14/1
Cheltenham 2.20 ~ Intac ew at 16/1
Cheltenham 2.55 ~ Absolutlyfantastic ew at 14/1

Should have gone ew on Stewards House, the rest were an interesting lesson in what can go wrong in horse racing.

It's a long time since I've been that drunk at 6pm on a schoolday, and it was a fantastic afternoon.
