1st Dan ITF here.

Indomitable Spirit
I suggest you look into the Korean side of the patterns. The extended meanings (beyond the stuff you get in the booklets that some instructors give out) are very relevant as examples to the tenets. Will try to look up some stuff when I get a chance.

Not directly related to the tenets, but may be useful.
I'll email a mate (and 5th Dan) who is really into the Korean history side.

I was a Black Tag before I stopped training (should of really finished), I trained/competed under the WTF organisation and our 5 tenets were:5 Tenets are:

They translate very similar (last three identical in fact). I'm guessing that my advice would also stand for WTF - i.e. the examples of the lives of the people who the patterns are named after give strong examples of the five tenets. Different pattern names for WTF isn't it?Modesty

Example of the extended history:

another:

As the tenets, very similar but different. I did go back and start training a couple of years ago with MrsSpdpug98 to an ITF class, but due to kids had to stop. I really do want to get back into it and finally get my 1st Dan (before I get too old!!!)
My wife is also 1st dan - I destroyed my knee which curtailed my TKD a fair bit (still used to drop in for a while afterwards to teach and kept with the social scene). Glad I got the Dan grade before it all crumbled though.Vytalis said:

The Fella that is running this school is 2nd Dan, I have no problem with him at all and he really seems to enjoy having the kids in there, I just want to know how to get across the five tenets, out side of teachings and sessions in the class.

I did my degree dissertation on 'The Psychological effects of Martial Arts Training on Children', focusing on aggression in particular and using a couple of cohorts of TKD. I used the 16PF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16_Personality_Factors). The results were pretty impressive - showing a slight increase in aggression up to green belt and then a substantial decrease (way below normal) from blue belt and above as well as other positive impacts. Would highly recommend it and will be encouraging our kids to train when they get old enough. The Fella that is running this school is 2nd Dan, I have no problem with him at all and he really seems to enjoy having the kids in there, I just want to know how to get across the five tenets, out side of teachings and sessions in the class.
I know its probably no use but thought Id add myself to this thread. I trained for 16 yrs in TKD (WTF) and am 3rd dan, but I have never seen gradings as the most important part of training. also not keen on gaining 4th dan as the club want you to become more full time instructor as its classed as a master grade.
I have been doing Muay Thai and MMA for 3 years now, but am a big advocate of TKD for kids, Its a great thing to focus them and help keep them on the straight and narrow
As for teaching the tenants, just try to relate them to things that happen in his everyday life, like we were taught, you are still a representative of TKD even when you don't have your PJ's on
