Does anyone play for fun etc?

I've mailed my local clubs to see if they have any space.

What kit do you usually use for training etc?

Do people still bother with tape and the like?

Cheers

I'm hoping to start again after 7 years out, generally all you need is a pair of boots (moulded boots are useful on a hard surface)and a gum shield plus shorts, jersey and socks of course!

I never bothered with tape myself, and I've played semi-pro as both a prop and a winger hehe (hell of a difference I know!)

Whereabouts are you located? Might be able to suggest a club smile

Gutted, sure there's nothing you can do to sort it out?

I'm having to use a knee support to stop my leg popping in half laugh

I play for Mosborough in Sheffield, but there are plenty of other clubs in and around Sheffield.

For kit, a gum shield, boots, shorts, socks and a training top is enough.

Er basically if I want to keep being able to walk relatively properly for the rest of my life I wont be able to play *any* sport again. Football, rugby, cricket, badminton, squash, tennis, etc. All the stuff I have loved playing over the years.

My feet and ankles have been quite badly weakened from the abuse over the years and with the Donkey this summer, it now means my right foot is highly susceptible to stress fractures across the ball of my foot. There is also a strong possibility/probability that there are crystals now in the joint of my big toe, so thats either gout or arthritus, we arent sure yet.

At 35 that kinda sucks frown

If you mean by 'fun' not getting paid?!

You planning on playing league or union? By bothering with tape depends on previous injuries or if your a forward palying union to avoid Cauliflower ear if you don't wear a scrum cap. Some players seem to be held together by tape.

It's good fun, and a bit of a commitment if you want to play regulary i.e. taking up your Saturdays for a good few months of the year. I know people who have had nasty knocks playing rugby that will stop then doing allot of stuff sports wise for the rest of their lives, to a greater extent some have really messed up back injuries. Been lucky to have only had a broken knee cap (painful) broken noses, lost a few teeth.....

Sorry to hear that frown I know it might sound silly what with your ankles, but have you considered ice hockey as an option? There's not much stress on the ball of the feet and there's a lot of ankle support in the skates, just though it might be an alternative way of keeping fit? smile

I did suffer a bit with my ankles (continually rolling over on them due to hypermobility mad ) and found that a 'wobble board' helped to regain strength and stability in them.

Again, gutted to hear of the problem you have frown

As a 44 yr old (well, in 3 weeks time), overweight TH prop who played his first game of the season on Saturday, on ground akin to concrete, in 19 degrees of sunshine, I thought I was going to die by about 5pm Saturday. And on Sunday and this morning the feet felt like Mike Tyson had been hitting them with a meat tenderizer, and my ankles felt shot, my neck/shoulders hurt and I am covered in bruises. In fact, I asked my wife yesterday morning if I had been run over by a Eurostar train but couldn't remember.

Yet I still put my name down for this coming Saturday already. I love this game of ours smile

Never used tape or scrum cap yet still have pretty ears wink

I quit last year aged 51.
I played every season since I was 11, and I am basically wrecked. Still would not have missed it for the world smile

Yeah, I play, fullback - so part of the pretty gang (backs).

As for training, I would say comfortable boots (world cups are excellent), socks, shorts & any old rugby jersey. You may want/need some shoulder pads if your doing a lot of contact (I use mine as I broke my collar bone and was recommended to do so).

Taking it one step further then I would add gumshield, any strapping/supports & your own water bottle. I was recommended by a top class coach that half orange juice, half water, 2 teaspoons of sugar and one of salt* is as good as any energy drink so may be a suitable filling.

*no idea why salt!

I'm guessing to replace the salt sweated out. I imagine my hideous diet takes care of all the salt I'd ever need.

Ive got that too, turns out to be psiortiatic (sic) arthritis, and not gout for me as I originally thought. bloody painful and really debilitiaing when it takes hold.
