Used to really enjoy float fishing as a teenager and would like to give it a go again so am looking for a budget match rod and reel. Criteria is maximum of £40 for both, length 12 or 13 ft and ideally would like to buy them from amazon as i have some vouchers to use.

So far, i am tempted with the Maver Abyss Rod...

I'm not really up to speed, just getting back into it myself and still have rods/reels etc.
One thing I have noticed is you get a lot more budget rod/reel for your money than when I was last fishing properly 15 or so years back.

I'd guess most if not all established brand stuff like that is going to be pretty decent.

Haven't done any serious angling for 20 years but in my experience 12' seems a little short. Guess it depends on the river but on the Thames I'd use 14'.

Things have changed a bit in recent years, with the emergence of commercial carp match waters and the resulting tendency to fill every muddy puddle up with little carp. It's affected the specification of match rods a bit, so you see a lot of stepped up rods sold as "carp waggler rods" and also "pellet waggler" rods.

What will you be using it for? Rivers/stillwaters, waggler/stick, roach and bream or tench and carp, etc?

I'm a big fan of Daiwa kit, though I must admit the last three coarse rods I bought were Drennan. Really nice, good quality, well designed rods. They have a range of float rods that I would be considering if I were in the market for such a thing;
