I am planning on doing 2 x 70.3's next year one of which will be in Calgary in July. Any recomendation son the second? Any tips advice gladly received as these will be the first half IM's that I have done, up till now mainly Olympic distance tri and century/double century bike events. Will be doing my first ever half marathon in September. All this in prep for my attempt at the IM Canada in 2013 with the aim to get an age group qualification into Kona!!!!!

These look like a lot of fun, however my dodgy old knees cannot take all the jumping about frown

Doing the 70.3 in Calgary Canada next year plus looking to do one other either in Euro/UK land or here closer to home. Half maarthon will be the Scotia Toronto gig, wife ran it last year and had an absolute blast. Real target is Kona 2013/14 !!!!!!!!!!

I've entered the 70.3 in Zell am See next year. The scenery in that area looks stunning.

I was entered in the Austria 70.3 this year, but had to pull out through injury. I've only done Olympic distance up to now, so I was so angry/frustrated/disappointed/bored at not being able to do Austria. Hoping I haven't lot too much fitness for next month's Hyde Park, and from there I can slowly build it back up over the winter.

OK so Calgary 70.3 next year is done, going to be a long day in Cow Town. Also about to be finalised are the following Argus Cycle Tour in Cape Town in March next year, it is a great way to start the season off even though I will have had very little outdoor riding by then again ( Canadian winters are nasty ) June looking at the London to Paris cycle for a laugh and a giggle from all I have heard a very good ride. September next year will be my second Ironman 70.3 in Muskoka, Ontario. Just got back from doing a sprint tri there over the weekend, fantastic open water swimming in a 200m deep lake ( no wetsuit needed though) plus a very challenging ride and run with a couple of very nasty climbs smile Fun times ahead I think. If any of you guys ever want to come race here let me know and I can assist with transport, accom etc

I did an Ironman distance race in 1996 and can only encourage anyone that's thinking of doing one. Obviously the training is tough, but I found the race much more enjoyable than any shorter races. Because of the relatively slow pace, I found the day strangely relaxing and it was nice to be able to acknowledge other competitors and have a bit of a joke with the marshals. There's very much the feeling that you are competing against the course rather than other competitors (obviously not the case for the few people at the front).

I should say though that I didn't quite feel the same about the half-ironman that I did the same summer. Perhaps that reflects the standard that I was competing at; I was able to "race" the half-ironman and therefore spent far more time concerning myself about how well I was doing relative to others.

You don't need to rack up multiple 70.3s to prepare for full iron distance - although there's no reason not to if you enjoy it.

What I'd suggest you do need, is a minimum 10 month lead-in with a properly phased progression in your training and a long base.

I find myself to be a strange beast, I enjoy training a lot, but not competing as much, however if I do not have multiple challenging events on the horizon, I tend to let training slip a little here and a little there which often becomes a lot of missed Runs/Rides/Swims etc. Is it just me? Most guys I know, hate training and love competing I seem to be the other way around!

I used to get very anxious about competing and really only enjoyed crossing the finish line. Except, as I mentioned, in the Ironman, which was fun. I gave up for 13 years - now I enter one race each summer as it motivates me to train

That pretty much sums it up for me, I enjoy the buzz and anticipation at the start and the feel good factor at the end but the bits in between a race I can do without ( the hard parts ) but I can happily jump on my bike and go out for a 100 mile ride at pace any time or find a lake and swim an out and back course for 40 - 60 minutes etc - weird how we all seem the same ( mad idiots for doing stuff like endurance races ) yet are all different - will see if my first 70.3 or full Ironman are different from runs, rides and normal ( yeah right ) Tri's smile
