Just watching first day highlights.

Saw Dokic and the chubber playing against the 40 year old Japanese girl.

For professional tennis players, it is amazing how fat and out of shape they are - like Mike Gatting with smaller tits!

I assume it is because women's tennis is so st, they hardly work off a sweat....

It is pretty disgraceful that a lot of tennis players do carry a bit of paunch. You certainly don't see that in althetics, Jessica Ennis for example.

Even Serena Williams has a huge fat ass and the likes of Kvitova has a wee belly - surely all the training and nutrition shouldn't result in carrying any excess weight.

It's not as if they were returning from maternity leave. Saying that, Dokic did have lovely boobies biggrin

A normal telly which simply shows rolls of fat on a persons back, huge legs and flabby arms.

I have no issue with men finding fat women attractive - someone has to.

My question is how, when you would think they practice tennis 4/5 hours a day can they still be so huge.

My theory is that they don't play that much tennis - which is why the standard on the womens tour is so poor.

This is a joke right?
You transfer your weight into the shots. More weight behind the shot, makes it a harder shot.
I'm pretty sure Venus and Serena have done something right.

you are right.

Michael Chang was the size of lorry....

..oh, wait a minute.

My point is, the men seem to be athletic. Some of the women are not. I do understand your thinking though - the fat ones need the bulk to hit the ball harder.

But Venus, Steffi and 70-80% of the other women aren't built like rugby players.

It was just an observation - not like I suggested they shouldn't get paid the same as men for playing 45 minute matches or anything...

Oh god no, they shouldn't earn the same. Maybe if they were made to be ball boys for the men's matches they'd be in better shape and could earn a few extra pennies for shoes and the like.
I think up until Williams came onto the scene, the larger female players were in the minority. Noone could compete with their power though, so more players get bigger. I believe either Williams would beat Graf.

Also Chang was hardly a prolific winner. Very good player, but aside from his French open title he was just an also-ran. Men have stronger muscles than women, so we don't need to be so big to hit hard.

I prefer the little girly players with very short skirts though (and don't care if they win or lose). Not man ladies like Williams or Mauresmo.

Ooof, bit harsh! Granted he only has the win at the French in terms of slams, but he is very high up the all-time earnings list even when compared to today's earnings. Huge number of titles as well.

I meant him no disrespect. He was a great player, revolutionised many aspects of play. My point was about size. The also ran was a comment when playing against the likes of Becker, Sampras and Agassi. He rarely beat them. Technically they must've been similar, so was it size that lost him those titles?

It's not really a sport is it? More a pass-time for wealthy types.

Was thinking this the other day, Dokic used to be thin, she's fking huge now, and is useless at getting round the court, quite embarassing really, you could see a roll of flab through her shirt.

As said all the men are fairly wirey and thin which is the build that lends itself to tennis, Roger Federer has arms like a 12 year old girl, but it doesn't matter.

With regards to them getting paid the same I think its probably fair enough? They had to get eqaul pay in one of the sports, as we all know nearly every other sports earnings are about 10-1 in the favour of men, for good reason, though.

One thing I couldn't work out is why women are worse at all sports, it would make sense in a sport such as football or tennis where strength agility etc are key things, but womens darts is just the same, they're awful in comparison...why?!

strictly speaking it is a game but then a lot of games are sport, or is that the other way round?

nothing elitist about tennis, just perceived that way, hardly epxpensive to get into...this is partly why we do not have more top 100 players...

true but that is a function of women not being as physically strong as men

hunter gatherer, men more physical, hand/eye etc etc?!!!

yes Dokic used to be a skinny little thing, the flab oh dear. Take a look at Bartoli she is huge

I really think a lot of them would not be able to cope with a 5 setter, there is no way they would be able to haul their bulk around!

I cannot agree I do not think it is fair at all, play the same get same

Within a few hundred yards of my house we have: Chipping Sodbury CC, Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club, Chipping Sodbury Golf Club and Chipping Sodbury Tennis Club.
The first three always have some kind of organised training going on, especially in season, but the tennis club is busy for about two to four weeks a year (now) with 'leisure players', daintily poncing the ball to and fro, having a good old natter.

They would be fitter if they played the best of 5 sets. And there wasn't such a huge gulf between the top 2 or 3 and the rest. How many 6-0 games!

assuming you are just not seeing the club at it's worst:

the club I play at is nothing like that, we play in all the leagues and there are a lot of players who treat it as a sport, but surely all sports clubs of this ilk have a social element

we have training once a week and we take league matches seriously, it depends how far you want to take it, I see many hackers on golf courses...

eta there is a movement to try to stop this way of thinking and get more kids playing: http://www.tennisforfree.com/
