Not won a tournament for a long time, down to 15th in the world and now pulled out of the US Open with a serious leg injury.

Is the era of the Tiger over and gone for good or will he be able to conquor his mental demons and physical problems and return to win more majors?

As much as I'd like to see Tiger back on the course playing golf , I think his body is getting knackered. It was always said that his swing would put undue strain on his body and something would have to give. His finish used to be a massive reverse C and that must have strained his back.

I'd love to be wrong as I think his iron play is superb and when his putting is on then he's the best player in the world to watch.

Lots of the golf journalists agree with you.

If he has any chance of winning another 5 majors to surpass Nicklaus' record he realistically has another 7 - 8 years to do it. Unless he changes his swing again to cause less stress to his body I cant see him still playing in a few years time let alone winning a major every year.

Rumours on Twitter suggesting he has officially withdrawn from The Open.

Not that this is a huge shock I admit.

Because the man is a classless clown who wasted his talent on cheap tarts. They should make spitting on the golf course a 2 shot penalty after the trend he and some of his clone compatriots started a few years back.

Not fit to be mentioned next to Palmer, Player and Nicklaus despite his record.

Yes, he's had his day now I think. As has been said, body can't take the strain and there's nowhere to hide if you're not 100% on thr golf course.

Talented beyond belief, but just another dumb schmuck who couldn't keep it in his pants I am afraid.

Like Ryan Giggs, will be remembered for the wrong reasons! Nicklaus' record will be safe.

While I agree fully with what you have said, he changed the game of golf forever and it's all the better for it. I personally am holding judgement just yet on him breaking Nicklaus' record, I have a feeling he will still do it. But then I hope Mcllroy comes straight after him and breaks the record again, the yanks will hate a European holding the most majors biggrin

For me Hogan is the greatest golfer in history.

+1...anyone that can win the Grand Slam (3 majors in 1953 - 2 were held at the same time so 4 not possible) 4 years after being practically dead has to be something very special.

I'm not so sure he's gone for good, i think he'll be back, but, like phil taylor is finding out, everyone else has raised their game to match him, and it's the same for woods, he's still a great player, one of the best, but look how the europeans have moved on. Rory winning the us open, westwood there or thereabouts in nearly every tournament, manassero, larazabal, the molinari borthers, quiros, they are all playing so much better now.

I actually like and hate him for reasons mostly covered above. For me, even if it turns out he's had his day, the one thing above all else that stood out about him was his mental game. His single mindedness and nerve were unrivalled at the time and set him apart from the other top players.

That's why I was so gobsmacked at his complete and utter capitulation, but as so often is the case, he was very much a flawed genius and needed a pressure valve (or two) as an outlet

I have to say though, as someone just starting out in the game of golf, i have a far deeper respect for Tiger, and everything he has achieved in the game so far, it's not as easy as it looks to hit a small ball

Jesus it's a frustrating game! wink

I certainly respect the achievements of Tiger Woods, and what he is able to do on a golf course, but he is a very difficult person to like.

He certainly has the potential to be around for many more years yet, and in a lot of ways I hope so as to see him and Rory battling for honours could be a wonderful spectacle for golf fans.

Very frustrating, agreed. I dont actually mind Tiger, as a person, he could be far worse. I think he'll be back, as i said earlier, like Phil Taylor in darts, everyone has raised their game considerably, and both he, and Tiger wont find it as easy to dominate their respective games anymore

I'm really not a fan of Tiger but he's only being caught up because of injuries and dents in his ego. Rory may have run away with the US Open but Tiger was doing this week in week out for years.

For me, no one has come close or ever will in terms of pure golfing ability. Once he's fit and changed his swing to something less physically punishing, I wouldn't bet against him sailing past Jack's major record. I doubt he'll be a nice guy though...he's been bred/programmed to win, full stop.

Yep, I'm with you on all that, particulalry the Taylor comparison. He is a massive asset to golf and his return to form would be a welcome thing.

I really hope he spots that horrible spitting habit though.

It's piss easy ... you should try a sport where the ball is moving ... wink

Can't wait to see an in form Tiger against an in form Rory in a major. At Rory's age Tiger only had one major under his belt. But for a couple of bad holes Rory would arguably have had two.

Granted, a moving ball, travelling at high speed will be tougher to hit, but i defy anyone who isnt naturally gifted, to go to a driving range, pick up a club, and smack a ball as far as Tiger or Rory can, or even halfway close to that. Better yet, hit a ball a long way, but straight, unless you are a natural sportsman, you wont do it. Oh, and as for the Tiger Rory comparisons, i found out the other day, Rory's first drive was 40 yards. Doesnt sound impressive, until you realise he was 2 years old at the time, he had a hole in one before he was 10 years old. If Tiger does come back, he will find a very impressive young man waiting for him
