5K Fun Run Times......
Discussion
Ive entered myself to do a 5k fun run,
I do a little running now, nothing serious, usually have the dog with me so its a lot of stopping and starting so times are irrelevant, i saw the fun run advertised at my local park and thought why not, was just wondering what would class as a fast time, going to do a few dummy runs to see how i get on, don't get me wrong, im not out to win, but i wouldn't mind not coming last!
Have a look at www.parkrun.com - they do 5ks in parks all round the UK every Saturday and results are published online.
Winning times for 5k road races round here are in the 15-16min area, average time for club races is around 20mins, anything inside 30mins is respectable for a beginner.

16 MINS!!!!
I think trying to get under 30 is a good target, ill try and build up to it,
im actualy quite nervous now, ive not been in a running race since sports day at school!
should be fun though!
6 minutes a mile (or 10mph) is a good running pace and is what I aim for and struggle to even get near lol my best atm is about 9 minutes a mile with about an average of 11 minutes a mile.I think trying to get under 30 is a good target, ill try and build up to it,

So I can see 5 and a half minutes a mile not being that hard to acheive as a seasoned runner.

By what everyones saying id be happy with 25-30 mins, im going to do a practice run tonight with no dog, just me and my ipod, then try and improve over the week, theres another that me and a few mates are doing in july so if i kept the training up i might do ok in that one,
While I'm no expert at all, you might find the improvement to be more gradual than you think. Definatley get some proper running shoes that fit your feet/gait though, they make the world of difference. PowerStation said:

Yeah i got myself a pair of Saucony Trainers which arrived last week, so there going to get a first try out today! as ewen said, parkrun is all you need. hopefully there is one near you, go to the website and get involved. its a free 5km weekly run and you get the times within 24 hours. nice friendly atmosphere too. the more you run with people, the faster you will go, its a massive incentive to look up and see the guy ahead and think "i can get him".... its even better if its a nice athletic female.....
Well i did my first timed 5k yesterday after work, 29 mins!! i was quite pleased but my ipnone app stopped with 1/2k to go so i think im looking at 30/31 mins which is alot better than i thought, i wont lie, it was tough, but i can see i can improve, i set off abit to quick, ill have another try today then rest weds, but really enjoyed it, and like a few said when im running with people that will push me that little bit more, oh and the new trainers were like running on clouds!
cheers for the advice everyone!

The flip side of that is that running with others who are a bit fitter/faster than you is a good way to push yourself harder than you might otherwise do so on your own.
Remember that it's meant to be hard work when you're doing a session/race. If you're doing a 5k/10k race or an intervals session and can chat to people around you, speed up
