Ive entered myself to do a 5k fun run,

I do a little running now, nothing serious, usually have the dog with me so its a lot of stopping and starting so times are irrelevant, i saw the fun run advertised at my local park and thought why not, was just wondering what would class as a fast time, going to do a few dummy runs to see how i get on, don't get me wrong, im not out to win, but i wouldn't mind not coming last! smile

40-45minutes ish?

13-15 minutes a mile is slow running pace.

Have a look at www.parkrun.com - they do 5ks in parks all round the UK every Saturday and results are published online.

Winning times for 5k road races round here are in the 15-16min area, average time for club races is around 20mins, anything inside 30mins is respectable for a beginner.

yikes 16 MINS!!!!

I think trying to get under 30 is a good target, ill try and build up to it,
im actualy quite nervous now, ive not been in a running race since sports day at school! smile
should be fun though!

Someone at my last parkrun did it in 70 minutes. Now that is slow. Average time for the race seems to be late 20s.

6 minutes a mile (or 10mph) is a good running pace and is what I aim for and struggle to even get near lol my best atm is about 9 minutes a mile with about an average of 11 minutes a mile.

So I can see 5 and a half minutes a mile not being that hard to acheive as a seasoned runner.

25 minutes is a fair time for an average runner.

30 mins - good effort for someone relatively fit.
25 mins - fit person who isn't really a runner (cyclist, football bloke etc.)
20 mins - getting into "runner" territory
17-18 mins - decent club runner
15-17 mins - good club runner, wins the occasional local race

Im down to 31 minutes for 5k, on the treadmill at least, with a belly. Thats after going to the gym for around 4 months. Bit by bit, its suprising how much you can improve.

While I'm no expert at all, you might find the improvement to be more gradual than you think. Definatley get some proper running shoes that fit your feet/gait though, they make the world of difference. thumbup

as ewen said, parkrun is all you need. hopefully there is one near you, go to the website and get involved. its a free 5km weekly run and you get the times within 24 hours. nice friendly atmosphere too. the more you run with people, the faster you will go, its a massive incentive to look up and see the guy ahead and think "i can get him".... its even better if its a nice athletic female.....

Having not run for a while, recently I've been doing 5k runs quite regularly. Got my times down from 30 minutes to a best of 24 minutes. Definitely room for improvement, but interesting to see what people consider a respectable time, I wasn't really sure!

Well i did my first timed 5k yesterday after work, 29 mins!! smile i was quite pleased but my ipnone app stopped with 1/2k to go so i think im looking at 30/31 mins which is alot better than i thought, i wont lie, it was tough, but i can see i can improve, i set off abit to quick, ill have another try today then rest weds, but really enjoyed it, and like a few said when im running with people that will push me that little bit more, oh and the new trainers were like running on clouds! smile

cheers for the advice everyone!

Be careful running with others that you aren't tempted into setting off too fast and being shagged out ofter 2k! You're better off starting a bit further back and speeding up after a while.

The flip side of that is that running with others who are a bit fitter/faster than you is a good way to push yourself harder than you might otherwise do so on your own.

Remember that it's meant to be hard work when you're doing a session/race. If you're doing a 5k/10k race or an intervals session and can chat to people around you, speed up wink

OK so i did the fun run, PB of 21:22!!
i was quite happy with that, i did get towed by a few faster runners near the end which helped, but i wasn't as tired as i thought i would be so looks like room for a faster time if i do another!
thanks for all the advice though! smile

Well done, good debut time and you will almost certainly go faster in your next one with the experience of this race under your belt.
