Hi chaps,

I don't venture into this forum too often but I've been asked to help sort out a present for my brother for an upcoming big birthday.

My brother loves his golf - he's not played for a few years, but has recently re-discovered his love of the sport and plays a lot. IIRC he plays of 8 or 9 and is being told that he should soon be down a couple more shots (I think he said 6 would be fair), so he's not a bad player.

He's never had lessons to my knowledge and knows a lot of guys that are scratch players, so he's used to playing with good players. What his wife would like to do is get him a round with a Pro at a good course. Is this doable?

My input would be that he's often commenting on 'natural' players and as he's a bit of a lad, he enjoys playing with people that have a bit of character. So, ideally, what I would love to find is a decent course (he's based in Northampton but I'm certain he'd travel to play) with a Pro that would play a full round with him and a) give a couple of pointers and, more importantly b) be good fun to play with.

Do any of you chaps have any suggestions?

Also, can you give an idea of cost?

I should have put this up a week or so back as I think we'll need to get something sorted in the next few days.

Any help/suggestions would be great appreciated.

Cheers

This is perfectly possible to do and is a REALLY good thing to do for someone at his level....I've done this a couple of times. Ideally you need to find a suitable course and then get in touch with the Pro Shop at that course and ask what they would charge for a playing lesson. If you go for a full round of four hours it's obviously going to be expensive.....if it's a pro attached to a course they may wave the green fee. Maybe just do nine holes ?

As for the course it depends on how far he wants to drive! Woburn has three great courses and should be close enough ?

Thanks for the reply. Woburn is definately close enough to him - I'll look into it.

When you say pricey, there's a good few of us chipping in so we should have a decent budget - would we be looking at £100? £200? £500? I'll get in touch with Woburn and see what they say.

Would Woburn be better than, say, The Belfry? Have you (or any other PHer) done something similar and had a good (or otherwise) experience?

Again, thanks for the reply.

Last time I played it was £185 for a game on the Marquess course (thank god mine was a free game). Goodness knows what a game with a pro will be, but if it is with one of the guys I met in the excellent prop shop it should be worth it, they were very friendly and down to earth. Woburn is an absolute gem, I wish I lived closer as I would definatly join.

My Dad did this at Slaley Hall a few years ago, not sure if they still do it, but if he is in Northumberlandthen it would be ideal.

The Marquess a great course and is the newest and has a couple of feature holes. Having said that the Dukes and Duchess are both very good courses....the Dukes is longer and wider and used to have a lot of big events on it....the Duchess is shorter but much tighter and is a very good test too. Can't go wrong with any of them but if the price is within say £50 go for the Marquess.

In Spring and Autumn they do a fantastic deal where you get two rounds breakfast and a great carvery lunch for not a lot of money....something like £150....or maybe less.

If you are looking at a four hour teaching lesson and green fee it'll be close to £500 but they may waive the green fee especially as a lot of Pro's struggle to get out on the course and would rather be playing than standing on a range.

Thanks again.

I've just spoken to his wife about it and she seem to think he might have played Woburn "as its a 1902 course".

I'm not sure if thats right or not, but she's going to go away and probe into what he has/hasn't played and what he might like.

Personally, I like the sound of one of the Woburn courses and I'm sure he'd remember that a lot!

Thanks chaps.

Woodhall Spa is another great course though that is in Lincs...better track than Woburn by reputation. A a playing lesson might be a great way to get on a course like Sunningdale which is very hard to get onto unless you know a member. Wentworth ? That'll be proper expensive though and it doesn't feel like a golf club.

Sunningdale is amazing the greens are like velvet.... Wentworth (west) is a tough course and i think most normal golfers would enjoy Sunningdale much more!!

True but Wentworth is on TV so much that it's nice to play it...if you're a single digit player it's a great test with all the dog legs on the back nine. If you're off 18 plus you're in trouble....

I haven't got any specific recommendations, but I'd say the particular pro will be more important than the particular course.

Get some recommendations on a pro who'll be good company, and give him specific advice on course management. And I don't mean when to water the greens!

You won't get much swing training done on the course, but if he's off 8 or 9, he's already hitting it reasonably well.

I'd say get someone who'll work with him on the way he thinks about how to approach the game, and how to approach each hole. The real beauty of golf lies in the eternal battle of ego versus maths, and most of us are rubbish at maths!

Percentages percentages percentages!

Chaps,

Sincere thanks for all the input. I took it all in and spoke to my sister in law who then did some more research and even called a golf show owner my brother sometimes plays with.

The upshot was that we bought him 6 lessons and then a 9-hole round with a Pro and at a cours both of which this lad said my brother would rate.

He seemed chuffed with it and had said that he wouldnt have bought something like that himself but would love to do it.

Cheers

Great stuff. Money spent on tuition is about 100 times more effective than money spent on clobber.
