So basically I've managed to work my way through all the pornography the internet has to offer and I was thinking of taking up some kind of martial art to busy my weeknights.
Does anybody have any experience of Krav Maga?
I'm after a martial art that is easy to get in to, a good form of exercise and has real world relevance. I've been looking at Krav Maga for a few weeks and could really do with getting myself down to a free lesson but wondered if anyone on here had any experience.
My only worry is I may need to miss the odd session due to work, hence why I've decided against a typical matial art. I'm also a bit concerned about the level of contact involved. I don't particularly fancy going into work with a black eye once a month or ringing the office to explain how I've managed to rupture my testicle for a second time because I've been booted in the knackers by a 17 year old blonde girl who is built like Lawrence Dallaglio.

Boxing. Thai boxing if you like kicking/kneeing/elbowing as well.
I like Boxing, watching at least, but as a real world form of defensive Krav Maga uses the whole body and has only two rules:1. There are no rules in a fight.
2. Do not injure yourself or your partner while sparring.
Even then I think those rules are unoffical.
Plus I've got this thing about being repeatedly smacked in the head. There's less of that in Krav Maga and more eye gouging.

If I'd been through all the porn I wouldn't bother with martial arts, if anyone fked with me I'd just throw them through a wall with a flick of my massive wrist.
Huh, wrists? Using your hands is soooo amatuer. I evolved beyond that by the time I reached Hentai. If I'd been through all the porn I wouldn't bother with martial arts, if anyone fked with me I'd just throw them through a wall with a flick of my massive wrist.

That reminds me of a CBBC feature once on anime, one clever chap emailed in and told how his favourite type of anime was hentai... they read it out live on air. Bless. The Beaver King said:

Yes, It's quite an easy system to learn but by no means 'less dedicated' than any other fight system. I did Krav Maga for a couple of years until a lack of time said I had to give it up.Does anybody have any experience of Krav Maga?

It's an excellent system and quite easy to learn but as I said no less involved than any of the Asian systems. The cardio involved is intense and the full contact 'pressure tests' are good fun. Any decent club isn't going to let you get your head kicked in but you will pick up the odd bruise
Your biggest challange is finding a club that isn't more into the current MMA/Cage fighting craze.
I say give it a go, you will know pretty quickly if it's for you or not.
BK - firstly admirable achievement on the p0rn front. Before you start any martailarts you may need to get yourself down the Docs for a check on the callouses.
Joking aside - to actually get the conversation started - why are you thinking of KM? A lot fo bods will say one art is better than another for their own reasons. My take on it is finding the right martial art for the individual.
What are you looking for apart form boredom relief (you've had enough relief already)?
Fitness?
Self Defense?
Something different / interesting?
Full / semi (not that kind of semi) / non contact?
defense / use fo weapons?
Just a place where you train or the full club atmosphere?
Close to home, car ride away?
If you can shed some light then maybe we can steer you to what is best for you

Thanks for the serious replies guys.
The club I am looking at is called Krav Systems and it's about 10 minutes from my house. With regards to getting swept up in the MMA craze, it is based in a venue that specialises in MMA, but I think it's a separate entity.
I'm looking to go for fitness mainly. I spent a lot of time running and doing free weights a few years ago but stopped after I had an operation on my back. I'm now looking to get back into regular exercise now everything has settled down except it's not that easy to just 'fall' back into it.
A martial art looked liked a good thing to take up with the benefit of being fairly social and something I could take pride in.
I looked at Krav Maga because seems like a fairly non complex form of fighting. I didn't want something that was all artsy fartsy and philosophical, plus I'm pretty tall and broad so I wanted something more power driven as opposed to being focused on agility and flexability.

Sounds like it is prety sorted for you then. Being close to home makes getting there easy and given how little I know about KM, a lot of the technique is grapeling / locking systema nd basic striking driven but I am happy to be proven wrong so go for it chap.
The one thing I would say - if you find you don't 'get' what the instructor is on about, remember that it may be the right art and not the right instructor or the wrong art for you. Doesn't mean you can't explore what one art / instructor combination is right for you.
Good luck

I did Krav Maga for a year or so, most sessions involved half an hour of cardio, then an hour of training on a subject e.g. top 10 attacks in the street, knife defense, gun defense then a pressure test. I really enjoyed it even though it was a long 2 hours sometimes. It really does make you feel more confident that you could deal with not just one nutter on the street attacking you, but you could put down 4 or 5 people if necessary. The steps are easy to learn and are often used in multiple scenarios. I'm really happy I now know how to deal with someone threatening me with a knife if I have no chance of running away.
Once you've learned the techniques of the session, the pressure test involves splitting into groups where 3 or so people come at you at full speed, swearing, shouting at you, threatening you, so you have to deal with their attacks and put them down, while keeping them all in view.

Ideal then, I've done Shotkan Karate (Brown belt) and Krav. For a given amount of time, lets say 3months, training once a week ... if starting from scratch, Krav would be x10s of times more effective than Karate. Shotokan doesn't really have any specific defense against weapons either - though for your average oik with a waepon of sorts, my money would still be on the martial artitst, as he's one likely to move quicker, do something 'unexpected, and be more accurate.
As mentioned above, in Krav anything, and I mean anything goes ... Many moves you use are just slight adaptions to what you would 'probably' do naturally, eg, Iif I grabbed you round the throat, you would (probably) move you hands up towards mine, the defense for this is just a sligt continuation/ adaption of the nateral movement, which is why it is so easy to learn. Sure, some of the more advanced stuff is a bit tricky, but in summary, Krav scares the life out of me ...
M
Even nipple buckets...?
I've done Krav for about 9 months, (but have not been for a few months as was doing other stuff), and its refreshingly simple to learn, good, practical, effective stuff and serves as a good workout. I've done judo and karate plus some army self-defense stuff and it does what it says on the tin in a 'street-brawl' context I think.
I'm a long distance x-c runner really so Krav is quite complimentary as it's very cardio/vascular plus helps with your upper body and core strength.
You may get an occasional bump but nothing serious.
