Afghanistan did well to get so far. I guess this was on the cards if they didn’t play to their full potential. Shame about the pitch. What was the problem?

Cracked with wildly varying bounce. A ball pitching in essentially the same place might hit the bottom of the bat or rear up and miss the batsmen's gloves.
SA recognised this and bowled straighter, 7 of the Aghan team were dismissed LBW or Bowled, mainly to balls keeping very low.

Not an isolated case at this venue, 5 All Out scores under 95 indicates it really wasn't acceptable. Should have played the matches at the Queen's Park Oval.

Yep, that’s not good. SA would have exploited that. Lateral movement ok. Variable bounce is a nightmare at that pace, plus the spinners would love it. I think the wickets have had an impact, along with the weather has made it tough at times for some teams. Having said that I’m surprised Afghanistan didn’t take advantage when they bowled. I guess chasing such a low total reduced the risk. At this stage in the competition having a pitch ‘not suitable’ is poor, but WI do have form. Let’s see how we get on this afternoon wink

Disgraceful choice really, when the whole fixture list has been geared around Indian TV audiences.

Might as well have put them straight in the final.
This. How can you have two semis one with a reserve day and one without, oh and it just so happens that top of the table India are given the one without and a free pass in the event of rain.

I also hear the AFG got delayed and had no practice time.

The majority of the organisation of this WC has been a joke

Sport v Cash. We have our answer. I don’t think it’s fair on the Indian team either. They can win without any help. These are money/political decisions. I can just imagine India going to Australia or here and having the same influence. We can’t watch matches in Aus live. It is the most India influenced World Cup ever, but we mustn’t blame the Indian team.

Ind vs Eng scheduled start 10:30 local.

Providence Stadium Guyana weather...

-There are 250 mins available to make up for lost time.
-Minimum of 10 Overs per side to constitute a game.

We may end up with a game if that forecast is correct. It'll be tight though.

Game should be concluded by 17:50 local (2x 85 min Innings +20 min break + 250 min allowance), so something like a 15:30 local Start at the latest for a T10 game.

Solid set of officials Gaffaney & Tucker on pitch, Joel Wilson watching the TV and Jeff Crowe the Match Official.

So no odd shenanigans with a reduced game whereby they try and get a full innings in and then run out of time/Overs for the second team.

There was a real respect shown by South Africa at the end of the match towards Afghanistan. Clearly a low total to chase but when the winnings runs were hit, there was no big celebration on the pitch - in fact it was fairly muted. Lots of handshakes and respectful hugs - Afghanistan have been a credit to the tournament and South Africa showed their appreciation. How cricket should be played.

Why does a tricky pitch favor an underdog, more than a road in the high veldt?
Good question. It gives the so called weaker bowlers more a chance. Pace off/cutters etc, although Afghanistan do have a world class spinner and a left armer in this comp who is the leading wicket taker so these wickets suit him and he has the skill to exploit them. Most of the batsmen like a pitch where they can hit straight through the ball with impunity. They can then bully a lesser team with the bat. The weaker teams are used to playing on poorer wickets and maybe cope better. It is interesting because Kohli, Rohit have done very little. SA have gun batters again very little. It was only de Kock who performed and that was against pace. These are world class batters. Shots are even more risky. Look at Salt he is very aggressive and the wicket didn’t allow him to be the bully against SA. They took pace off and it’s tougher for batters on these wickets, because the ball can stick and the bounce is more variable.

Interesting question but it does seem to work that way sometimes and the game is more interesting for it. Not always, but it can produce surprise results. The team that wins is the one that adapts best to the conditions.

Probably doesn’t answer your question though smile
Didn't work out this way. Was a tricky pitch and Afghanistan got bowled out and THEN SA made it look like a road in the high veldt.

I don't subscribe that crap pitches favour the underdogs. Crap pitched favour those with better skills. Good pitches favour those with better skills.

Plenty of evidence on both sides, but your last point 'The team that wins is the one that adapts best to the conditions. ' is spot on.

Part of me wants it to be rained off so then we can have a justified moan about being knocked out without losing the match.

Cricinfo reporter says 16:14 local is the latest start time for a T10.

Recent showers. Outfield puddles drained quickly...

They are going to move heaven and earth to get a match on even of it’s only 5 overs.

The playing conditions for the semis require a minimum of 10 Overs to be bowled in the second Innings.

So we'll need about 2 hours of playable conditions even if the first Innings is only 10 Overs.

Farcical that India can just walk into the final by default (if it happens).

I'd like to hear YJB rhapsodising, lamenting, and bewailing the "spirit of the game" if India stroll through because of rain.

Just switched it on (and looks like just in time).

Looking at the weather right now, you'd never have known it was raining!
