Yup. Fin Smith tipped to start.
The England backs won’t have many caps between them and will be unfamiliar with each other. Could be chaos
FTFY
They have a 9 / 10 pair that are familiar with Mitchell and Smith (Fin) who play together all the time which could make a difference.
I can't see them risking Marcus Smith against Italy if it's 'only' a tweek...
Agreed.

Agreed, Fin Smith being the Smith in question

The blue wooden spoon doom post.....

Find a way to lose against Wales;
Valiant defeat to France;
England make a statement in Murrayfield;
Narrow defeat in Rome;
Spanked in Dublin.

hehe

Not so grim thoughts, Tight wins against France and Italy.
The way we lose against Wales is with a 7th minute sending off, after conceding a fluke try involving a lucky bounce for the Welsh and a sprint the length of the pitch from their hooker.

I'll be there to witness the usual.

I am off to Rome on Friday looking foward to the game and frankly a weekend in Rome.

ETA I will be wearing Loakes but don't own any Chinos.
Have always fancied this trip but never done it- top work Ben.
We went a few years back for the Ireland game. 5 nights had a fantastic time and spent a fortune and got proper messy!

Not expecting much to change from last years 6N despite retirements/injuries/ non availability post World Cup
Ireland and France squabbling over top spot
England wales and Scotland dogging it out to be best of the rest
Italy for the wooden spoon
Wales appear worst hit on the personnel front.

Re Englands fly half:-
Don’t think either Smith was going to be the starting 10
Despite rumours that England were going to be seeking to play a more expansive game , I really can’t see Borthwick changing the tactics employed by England so far ,very much (if at all!) tbh.
That given , in the absence of Farrell, Ford Is always going to be flyhalf , unless the injury he’s currently “managing” is worse than being stated by the team.
Marcus may have got a look in given that Ford is carrying an injury and it’s “only” Italy but under other circumstances probably not
Can’t see Borthwick starting Finn though - I may be wrong but I just see him as being too risk averse, he just strikes me as a guy who plays percentages, studying stats and erring on the side of caution, rather than rolling the dice and taking a punt.
Hoping to be proved wrong

For want of a better expression Borthers puts me in mind of an accountant - numbers, not passion...

England's back row selection looks interestingly unpredictable.

Possible 7's: B Curry, Underhill, Earl

Possible 8's: Earl, Dombrandt

Possible 6's: Pearson, Coles, Cunningham-South, B Curry, Roots

Looking for balance, if it was me I'd probably go for:

7: Underhill (Tackle, Jackal, Link, Carry)
8: Earl (Carry, Link, Jackal, Tackle)
6: Cunningham-South (Carry, Line-out, Tackle)

I like Pearson at 6 too, better line-out option than C-S I think, very athletic, but not quite as confident or as aggressive carrying.

According to few reports Borthwick has a major thing for Roots - I've watched alot of premiership rugby this season, but have only seen a couple of Exeter matches and Roots hasn't really stood out for me.

Dombrandt at 8 looks spectacular for Quins, and maybe now has the confidence to impose himself in international games, but doing so would require a step up from his previous England performances.

When he's fully fit, I think Underhill is a special, special player - I'd pick him ahead of any other English open side including peak T Curry.

The only thing I'm certain of is that Borthwick will not go for the same mix I have - what do others think?

Mitchell may be crocked too now.

The England team is looking like it’s going to have very few caps between them.

I have been before as part of a rotation of one away fixture each year. Italy is the only one we are really keen to repeat (Edinburgh being close second)

Just take care of your wallet - particularly on the tubes/trams - all the lowlifes descend on Rome for International weekends.

Wales may have beaten Italy last year but in our hotel the score was an impressive Wales 0 - Italy 5 (3 wallets, one purse and one handbag).

Yes I know every big City is similar but Rome is at the top of the table…..
