Woah, just saw the result! This World Cup keeps throwing up surprises and Australia being thrashed by Afghanistan is right up there, although that is harsh towards Afghan who are a good side.

Here's hoping for a good, solid victory for England today at the Kensington Oval - scene of WI demolition of the USA just 2 days ago and India's bowling demolition of Afghanistan a few days before that - which would see us qualify no matter what happens in WI v SA. However, showers are expected throughout the game!!!

if we do qualify, we'd have got to the semis in the most scratchy way possible

Excellent from Afghanistan doesn’t surprise me. Qualifying for the semis is all that matters how you get there doesn’t. Then the games are one off and anything can happen.

The reason this comp is interesting is the wickets. They are not just a bat fest which T20 often is. The IPL demonstrated that and tbh it got a little boring. It means results are never a given and provide the likes of Afghanistan or any team with the chance of winning against the odds. More importantly it brings bowlers into the game. Having said that they are not a side to be underestimated and have some quality players and it’s great to see them doing well. England will need to remember that later on today.

Agreed. Have we seen a 200 score yet, I can't remember...

I'll have to catch up on the AFG/AUS highlights, it looks like it was an interesting game, and you can't not like AUS getting beat.

Why does a tricky pitch favor an underdog, more than a road in the high veldt?

Afghanistan have a real chance to qualify from that group now. Aus have a slightly better NRR at the moment, but it puts them in the position where Australia have to beat India by more than Afghanistan can beat Bangladesh to be sure of going through. Even if they beat India in a tight game, they could still be overtaken if AFG thrash Bangladesh.

Good question. It gives the so called weaker bowlers more a chance. Pace off/cutters etc, although Afghanistan do have a world class spinner and a left armer in this comp who is the leading wicket taker so these wickets suit him and he has the skill to exploit them. Most of the batsmen like a pitch where they can hit straight through the ball with impunity. They can then bully a lesser team with the bat. The weaker teams are used to playing on poorer wickets and maybe cope better. It is interesting because Kohli, Rohit have done very little. SA have gun batters again very little. It was only de Kock who performed and that was against pace. These are world class batters. Shots are even more risky. Look at Salt he is very aggressive and the wicket didn’t allow him to be the bully against SA. They took pace off and it’s tougher for batters on these wickets, because the ball can stick and the bounce is more variable.

Interesting question but it does seem to work that way sometimes and the game is more interesting for it. Not always, but it can produce surprise results. The team that wins is the one that adapts best to the conditions.

Probably doesn’t answer your question though smile

First thing I saw when I woke up was a Hatrick for Cummings and just assumed Aus had won, then saw CricInfo. Even my man in India messaged me in shock and he normally pays little attention to any game that isn't India.

Forgot ENG go again today, and is its my birthday I'm going to get the beers in and enjoy.

Need to keep Taylor in check. He is, from what I've seen previously, USA's best batter.

ETA: I actually meant Aaron Jones! smile
