what's a 'mudpig' looked on Google and it seems to be a term applied to bream and carp?
Which is why they used to transfer them into running water for a week or so to clear them out before eating them.

So someone on one of the Facebook groups recommended the new series of this.

Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, Series 1: Episode 3: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0b98nb0 via @bbciplayer

Now I love Paul Whithouse and his excellent characters so had a watch of this episode about fly fishing specifically.

It’s really very enjoyable indeed, it’s beautifully filmed, with lots of very nice drone footage cleverly added to show the beauty of the natural surroundings.

But it also made me quite sad too, it’s basically me isn’t it?

One phrase that hit me right in the feels was when they watched a leaf fall from the tree and onto the river, and exclaimed it was the start of autumn, and that they were basically in the autumn years of their lives too.

Gosh.
Brilliant series, watched them all with Wifey. I start the day the same way with the same tablets hehe My mantra when I wake up is "every day's a bonus!"

And the two together in the fabulous little case, not for me this hassle of a massive rod and bag to carry, I’m going in full stealth! “ Yeah Boi!”

Thought you would of gone the whole hog (you will eventually i'd guess) and gone for a baitcaster set-up. More versatile, more accurate, much lighter and way more fun in my opinion. Oh and far more street cred wink Check out the Abu Revo SX and google reviews ................

That would have been quite a capture! Carp occasionally take lures, but it’s a bit of a freak occurrence. Did you put the lottery on this week?
Foul hooked springs to mind hehe

Only joking Nige as it sure looked like a clonker thumbup

Lesson to be learnt - always have your landing net ready by the side of your swim and make sure it's bigger than you think you need.
Indeed as I mentioned earlier I was ill prepared, I know it now and feel stupid I was not fully prepared.

I spend so much time teaching my students about preparation and taking the steps from being aware of their state ie Unconscious Incompetence to conscious competence and what it takes to learn it’s a journey and it takes a set of steps to complete and reach your goals, you would think I might be capable of recognising and taking those steps myself!
I've never been a fly fisherman and certainly not down wiv' da' yoof lure fisher but when I was fishing, being gravel pit, lake or river I would set out my swim with the landing net fully extended to my left with the handle propped up on an old bank stick, my forceps and disgorger ready to hand and the ground bait and bait to my right. Then add some bait to my hook and start fishing. To often I saw people chuck their line out without being ready and get smashed up immediately because a fish took their bait.
Personally I can't get my head around trying to catch any fish that you're not going to eat.

Christ , I don’t even want to look it up, but what the smeg is a clonker? A type of Carp I assume?
Clonker
a common fisherman's phrase to describe something big.
"That fish is a clonker"

Many firms offer big nets but the Fox Rage Speedflow is a nice compromise of size and ease of transport on the bank . It's big enough to cope with anything you will encounter down t' canal, and looks well street . I look forward to catching something that fills mine

I've caught several carp up to 14 lbs on light lures (small paddletails etc ) and also a double figure mirror once on a deep fished Dog Nobbler fly .

Back on topic , a steady day on the river yesterday. Coloured after rain -normally a good thing but everyone was half asleep. Next to no rising fish , and not queueing up for nymph either . 10 wild browns to about 10" , and a couple of grayling - all but one on 16 PTN , one fish on a 16 black Klinkhamer . I wasn't klink and dinking , BTW , as I prefer higher flow rates for that .
This rain will do wonders for the Salmon run on our stretch of the Usk thumbup

Gunki looks well peng (or is that rude ?) - perfect for the job. If you are in spending mood a lightweight pack is really useful when you need to be mobile . I use a Simms Ambipack which is ideal for fly and lure fishing . I prefer to use my Simms vest in dry conditions for fly fishing but use the pack for all lure work as I carry more .
My latest "vest" had it about 5 years. Now available for about 40 quid...........

Best feature is the rod holder that allows both hands free as you walk or change flies.

We're fly fishermen, not special forces FFS! hehe
rofl

How much does that weigh fully loaded? I would be concerned about getting inverted in deep water wearing that.
rofl

But it works though. I fish light, you don't have to fill all the pockets so it's as "heavy" as you make it.

PS. Why would you be in water over your nadgers?

Mats and the rest of the carpers' stuff are fine if you are targetting carp or pike , but just another thing to carry if you are lure fishing for other species. I only use a mat if I am carp or pike fishing at venues with hard banks(nearly all of mine are soft mud or squashy grass/moss. Doubtless I incur the wrath of the carping Taleban on the occasions I don't ... No sleep will be lost
But Nige IS targetting a Carp, so he should be well prepared as I doubt the canal side is 'soft mud and squashy..' !
Just my view, and i totally understand the thrill and 'unfinished business', but i'd forget about that Carp as it's highly unlikely to happen again. Get back on the fly rod/s - the season will soon be over wink

Says me that's not cast a fly all year paperbag

Difficult year all round tbh, what with Panda Mick arriving on our shores followed by a dry Spring and hot Summer, hasn't been easy for all concerned.

I'm thinking of taking up ...

And back on the subject of jackets.

This is the Greys GRXI fly Fishing jacket I bought probably 6 years ago now!

It’s been great to be honest, I’ve always loved a jacket/vest with lots of pockets.

But I have to admit I really am an idiot at times.

After someone mentioned the backpack vest earlier in this thread , and it had a rod holder, I thought what a really good idea that was.

So guess what, a quick search on line and I found out my jacket already has a rod holder!

What and idiot I am!

Took me a while to fathom out the rod holder too - such a simple but great feature.

Anybody else agree that banning the taking of Salmon (it's now catch and release only) will do virtually zero to Salmon stocks?

And on that subject, should I fish a blob or a squirmy wormy under my bung? hehe

Some fly guys can be awfully judgy, though not usually about the same subjects as the bivvy boys.
Fish what you like, mate. I see lots of mention of snobbery by fly fishers, but I think most of it is just tired old anecdotes from long ago being repeated ad nauseam . But one reliable source of snobbery is the guy who does the Wessex chalk stream reports in Trout and Salmon ,

I was asked by T and S to review an anthology of his work - and for the first and only time I turned down the offer. Such a catalogue of snobbery and elitism was not getting a word from me ., Anyone who regards coarse fishermen with such contempt ,and affects disdain for every little innovation does the sport no favours at all.
Agree with T and S snobbery. Heck the price of it alone reflected that back in the day. The only time I got to read it was was in my doctors surgery!

I've only occasionally seen it on the bank - I'd just started fly fishing for trout (had been doing it for coarse fish for a while) and I booked an hour with an instructor at Bushyleaze. He set me up with a buzzer under an indicator, tidied my casting up, and off he went. Chatting to another bloke, friendly, but pretty snobby about coarse fishing and about my indicator. I caught more than him, which probably didn't help.

Attitudes on fly fishing forums on the other hand...
He would have ‘accepted’ the method had you used a large dry fly as the indicator hehe I quite often do this using a Grey Wulf and tie the buzzer, nymph or wet directly onto the hook of the dry - two chances of catching.

I did this as a result of freshly stocked Rainbow going for the bright pink foam indicator on a local pond.
