8 pars today for an 84, striking the ball as well as I ever have, dreadful chipping, which is killing me!

Notnbad considering only my second 18 this year smile
I feel your pain. I reckon I consistently leave at least 10 shots per round out there purely down to an inability to chip.

Played an evening 18 last night & have got to say, the pins were an absolute joke. Every single one was 8ft on, front or back. Shot a 7 over front 9 that I was reasonable happy with given two doubles. And then the wheels fell off. 15 over back 9 and lost 9 balls in the process. Somehow have developed a huge block / fade miss & the odd pull….i can see a driving range session or twelve before the next round.

Stupid game 😬

Played yesterday evening with Ashfordian. Lovely time out. I will leave out my score as it pains me to type it out. I'll just lave his quote here as I think that sums it up:

"You'd be a single figure provisional golfer"

cryhehe
I'm glad you took the quote as intended. It demonstrates the potential your game has, and it will come over time.

For everyone else, to put a bit of context behind that quote, S94wht had recently hit his 5 iron off the tee (provisional ball) next to where I had hit my 3 wood...

This is something that is quite easy to improve. Spend an additional 20-30 minutes practicing chipping before every round for the next 6 weeks and you will notice the difference.

Also, don't automatically go for the lob wedge, practice with something around the 50 degree loft, PW these days are more for chip and runs due to their lower lofts. Most chip shots don't require that much loft.

I would not a single figure handicap player without my short game. All I did and still do is spend time before rounds practicing, rather than wearing myself out hitting into the nets.

So you're saying we're supposed to practice!? hehe

I only play 10 rounds a year, range work has kept me shooting ok scores, I don't practice chipping, so I'm not surprised it's the weakest part of my game smile

I definitely spend more time practicing chipping than practicing the long game. I might hit a couple of 7 irons, 1 drive, 1 hybrid before a round and thats it for the longer shots. Unless I’m trying to change something I don’t really go to the driving range at all and would rather spend an hour chipping and putting.

Agree with the loft comment. Although I practice with a 60 in the back garden and hit release 1 & 2s with proper balls and practice bunker shots and release 3’s with a plastic ball.

On the course, I use mostly a 9, or a PW around the green and very rarely resort to my most lofted club unless I’m short sided - my chipping is much much better than it used to be. I think practicing with a 60 but hitting other clubs on course is the way to go for me. I’ve never been more confident at chipping as I am at the moment.

Ridiculous game hehe

After being pretty low after a poor few weeks, today was much better. 76 gross (+4) and -1 net. Poor front 9, but then a personal best 35 back 9, highlight being a 7 iron from 142 into wind on SI 1 to 6ft and holed for birdie.

Holed out much better today and generally kept the ball in play. Finished 3rd in division 1, 2nd lowest gross..

Sounds like too many of you had fun on the course this weekend while I was wrenching and mowing the grass!!

But alas, Monday brings me time to catch up with a round at the "hopefully" beautiful Buckinghamshire GC

Anyone played it before, any tips

Appreciate the tip, but had lessons and spent hours on the short game area all to absolutely no avail...... given I now dropped from 2 games a week to a round every 2 weeks roughly I see no point in trying to sort it for now.

I can chip/pitch - just not on a golf course.........

Of course, it was funny. I was terrible off the tee all day hehe The very next hole I blasted one straight right into a tree and then creamed the provisional down the middle.

I played again off the whites today and shot 6 or 7 shots better. Still struggled a little off the tee, but the main problem holes were 9, 10 and 18, and if they had been better things would've looked much better.

The thing about Bar Hill, I was thinking today, is that you rarely miss a fairway and and still have a shot into the green. You're never just in the rough, it seems like you're ALSO under a tree etc. Hitting fairways is the worst part of my game at the moment and if I hit more of them, I'd hit more greens/get closer more often and scores would come down.

Was so hot out there today. The last few holes were a slog and I hit two terrible balls off the tee on 18 due to the club just spinning in my hands.

As it happens, yes.. modern tour course as in pretty wide definitely some blind approaches. Greens not small.

Played the Grove today, pretty much best round of the year. It’s way too generous off the tee imo but obvs a top experience if you can wangle a deal

Another reporting in with a good weekend.

We couldn’t play out course on Saturday so made a last minute decision to play down at Girton.

The course is in lovely condition and the weather was perfect. Was 3 over after 3 but managed to keep the score down to just 4 over despite a couple of doubles. Replaced a 7.7 with a 4.6 differential to bring my index down to 5.1 and the lowest I have ever been.

On Sunday we won our pairs knockout 6&5 against the captain biggrin. We didn’t play particularly well tee to green, but putted very well when it counted and were gifted a couple of holes. Still, it was an enjoyable round played in good spirits.

Unfortunately the boys swing has completely deserted him. He’s struggling to make and kind of decent contact which is getting him down. I blame him playing cricket!

2nd shot prohehe

I played with my son today and he wasn't particularly happy with his overall game until I told him he'd hit low 90's but with a blob. He didn't realise that he'd played well and it was a lesson for him that sometimes we can play well and not score what we think we should have and sometimes you are just grinding it out. The weather was perfect at the start and end of the round with cloud cover but in the middle when the sun came out it was tough. I think he was just happy to get out after finishing his A-levels on Thursday.

I'm still trying to figure out why I'm hitting it 10 yards to the left of where I'm aiming. The aim and body alignment are good, it just seems to go straight left about 50% of the time. Time to book a lesson where the pro takes a look at 1 swing and figures it out!

Wonderful afternoon at The Berkshire on Saturday. The Red Course in sparkling condition! Shame I didn’t play very well and we lost our match, although managed to play the final 6 holes just 1 over the card including a birdie on 17 (just missed the very makeable putt below for eagle). Fantastic place.

That does look a phenomenal place! I'm also keen to know if that putt on the last photo went in? Looks like it's tracking well smile

Also good to see so much good golf being played, fair to say the season is in full swing now.

To add to the good news stories I played in 3 Man Scramble yesterday at Stone with a guy off 2 and another off 8. Never played in a 3 Man version before but it was a fun format - off the Whites, 10% of combined handicap and everyone had to get 6 drives in, which made things interesting over the last few holes. Somehow I got mine in first despite not really hitting it well until the back 9 and the guy off 2 was left with 17 and 18.

We shot an 8 under 63 for a nett 61 - not too bad at all considering we were level gross after coming off the 7th green. I left before everyone came in expecting someone to come in with a score in the 50s, but I've checked BRS this morning and it would appear we won!

Cheers boys, I do like a bit of camera work!

Unfortunately I had to settle for a tap in birdie, you can see my disgust here:

That's awesome that you won it! Mainly because all I ever read about online, is disgustingly stupid scramble cheating scores! 8 under is definitely about right for a 3 ball, well played smile
