Hi guys, currently sitting in my hotel room in Hannover (I think!!) as we have been setting up for the Ghana v Italy game, so I thought I'd offer up a few answers from the front line about the coverage.

First up the clock on the BBC has to be that size, as it's been specfied by InFront (rights holders), they actually wanted it to be a couple of TV lines smaller!
The camera positions are dictated by the stadium and the way it is built, we have the same issues at home with places like West Ham and Spurs, both main cameras are almost directly above the nearside touchline. Lots of the stadium here have steeped sides so there is very little that can be done about that.
The main camera is very wide, I think this might be driven a little by the fact it's HD, but most broadcasters are complaining about this, so there might be a small change soon.
As for the people who work on this, they are selected from around the world, and it's only from the rights holders. So unfortunatly the best football director in the Europe isn't here!! Lots of Spanish, German and French have different ideas on what football should look like. Games from Dortmond, Gelsenkirchen, Nuremburg and Kaiserslauten are directed by English guys, so they should be a bit more like what you are used to, but they are given strict style guidelines to stick to.

Excellent, thanks for that. One question though - are you talking about the "pop up" clock that's really big, or the permanent one that's absolutely tiny? Because the tiny one that I complained about appears to be a BBC-only one (i.e if I switch to G2, that clock isn't there, but the giant pop-up one is identical to the one that appears on BBC, which would lead me to conclude you've probably got the wrong end of the stick. )

Same here and I also thought the sound was shot to pieces. At times it was though the stadium was silent. It then apeared to return to normal and the blacking out disappeared.
It appeared to me that we lost surround sound when the clock reappeared about 20 minutes in. Some very strange things going on, hope they get it sorted.

Can't say that I thought the clock was small, but then the screen we were watching it on was 10' across...

The permanent clock was the one I was talking about, the 'Added Time' graphic is the really large one. Oddly that was designed to be even bigger!
I could waffle on for days about the graphics packages that the broadcasters were offered, but I am guessing that G2 have the host style package, which won't include a permanent clock. But I've not seen anything from them or ITV as I can't get that out here...

There were a fair few technical hitches during the game, most if not all outside the control off the BBC.

I remember the West German World Cup of 1974 and that also seemed to suffer from far too many long shots.
(Also, it seemed to bucket down with rain at every match - although I doubt if that was the fault of the TV presentation).

There were no problems with the on-screen graphics that year - there weren't any.

always very entertaining.

My favourite is Alan Hansen though. Funny, dry sense of humour, often without even realising it himself

I cannot remeber the name of the French guy that has been doing some fine pundit work on the BBC.

What he says is the truth and is so so correct it hurts.

Him, Hansen and wright and you make for very correct very funny accurate pundits.

Yep that is the Gentleman, mental block prevented me from thinking of his name.

When was the last time the BBC had a world cup winner as a pundit?

Leonardo seems to be doing a great job for a dead artist with one ear. (or was that Van Gogh?)
