Well, I'm no fan of hers but she played very well there in the 2nd and 3rd sets. Deserved the win.

In such a topsy turvy match, that's a proper good win for Emma smile

Well done ER; looked like she overcame some problems dealing with the heat to go from facing a match point in the second set to win on her own first match point. First set win against a top 10 (actually number 5) player and first match win against a top 10 player.

Shot selection is improving, some slight inconsistences with her serve sometimes but her match fitness and sharpness is improving as is her physical and mental resilience.

Did I just hear that right.....first time she's ever taken a set off a top 10 player??
laugh

Well it helps if you play tennis rather than choosing to opt out of qualifying or playing tournaments in favour of her many "RnR" breaks (oh sorry, I mean recovering from a billion injuries!). Only taken 3 years... in your own pace love! laugh

That’s a hell of a win. Pegula is ranked 5 in the world and won on grass in Berlin last time out.

Emma plays Daria Kasatkina tomorrow. Court and time TBC. Could be quite a challenge...

She’s 21, won a slam and made millions, I’d say that her pace is going quite nicely.

And well done to all the ladies players today, a fantastic tennis day all round. Very impressive wins.

And what have you achieved in life so far to be so systematically negative about a young successful tennis player?

When you simply speak the truth and it's portrayed as negative, especially around middle-aged fanboys. laugh Not winning a set against a Top 10 player 3 years after winning the US Open is just a sad indictment of how little tennis she's played even when she has been fit. Throwing a game in Madrid and admitting afterwards she's "tired" after playing just a couple of tournaments, screams snowflake. Then she has temerity to speak up about the game she doesn't actually play that much about different tennis ball weights and large adjustment needed... well, just makes you shake your head.

She chooses to opt out of tournaments and qualifying and instead chooses to goes on RnR breaks. Quite a few. The ironic thing is I do actually want to see Raducanu do well but I also want to see the hard work and dedication to her craft because as we saw a glimpse yesterday, she certainly has the game and the determination. She slowly seems to be going in the right direction - actually stuck with a coach for more than 5 mins - a start for sure - and got rid of the billionaire side distraction and seems to be focussing a bit more on her tennis. I agree she is young and she'll make mistakes but tennis is such a short career. Anyway, I'll stop the so-called negativity otherwise known as the truth if she keeps performing like she did yesterday. All the noise around instagrams, qualifiers and throwing matches will go away as the noise of her playing and winning matches slowly takes over.

Your arrogance in presuming you know how an athlete should live their life and temerity to assume that someone you don't know and don't have access to is living their life 'wrong' is the startling thing.

This coupled with the stereotypical simplistic view that if an athlete (let alone one who is just 21) is not achieving at every tournament then it's not good enough.

Finally, did the founder of instagram sleep with your wife or something? confused

When Emma wrote on the camera "At my pace" she followed it up with -

“I would say it's just I'm going to do things on my own time, at my own pace, and I'm in no rush to do anything. And everything I'm doing and playing for now is for myself. Whether that's tournament scheduling, whether that's how much time I take off to train compared to compete, I think I'm just way more focused on my own lane and less susceptible to outside opinions or views. I'm just enjoying it, to be honest. Just doing everything for myself and really just being independent out here.”

Sounds like she has her own idea of what success looks like and is doing a pretty good job of achieving her vision and enjoying it along the way.

tbh, I think it refocussed my view of what success looks like for her + made me think far less critically about pure on court achievement.

Play starts at 11am with Emma's against Kasatkina match being third on the schedule.
So far, doing it her own way and at her "own pace" seems to be working smile

They haven't achieved anything Nick and they do not know how competitive top level sport is.

Exactly Andy, that's my assumption. It's incredibly competitive where the difference between success and failure is litteraly a few key points and/or a few mm.

Looks like Kasatkina will be knocking her out today unless she can find another miracle.
