Thought I'd start posting a Hammersia tip of the week, seeing as I claimed to have mastered the game a few months ago and everything is still going well:

Chipping

Keep your left shoulder down in the setup, or at least feel more level with your shoulders. You want a steep angle of attack, and with a wedge (52 this time of year) if you just setup with the face a touch open (just a touch) you can still use the bounce effectively.

IMO Rick is not quite as good as he thinks he is, or thinks he should be.
He knows he’s nowhere near what he was a few years ago. Most half decent club pros would beat him these days.

Realistically he’s probably a 2 or 3 hcp at the moment, so 10 shots from the tour pros he plays is about right. Most of them would be +6/7.

It’s not surprising. He doesn’t really play any more I’d imagine, despite the videos he puts out.

Had my first 18 in around a month today in our winter league, and was quietly pleased with how I got on. Doubled the first after skulling a chip across the green (my own fault - it was sitting down and I forgot we had preferred lies all over the course), then settled down with a few pars and ended up going round in 80, or +9. Left a few shots out there for a few reasons:

- Didn't have a measuring device so was estimating - always ended up bang on line a club short.
- Kept blocking myself out behind or under trees
- Left 4 putts inches before the hole bang on line (my playing partners struggled with this as well.

Swung the club really well though, and despite the putting woes above (and the skilled chip) my short game was working pretty well - ended up with 6 up and downs and 28 putts. No lost balls either smile

So a pretty good day, plus a feeling there's a lot more to come.

Didn’t manage to get out to play but got to the range tonight. Seem to be cruising at 171ish ball speed with driver at the mo…my version of speed training is paying off at last…

As a bit of an experiment, a mate brought an old RBZ driver & my ball speed didn’t drop at all with it…distance was maybe 3-4 yards less averaged over maybe 5 drives…. Kind of proves all the marketing tosh is just that on the newest stuff…also managed to sneak 1st on the weekly long drive leaderboard 😅.

May have tweaked my goal for the year to hit 180 ball speed but that may just be a pipe dream!

Completely depends on what fault you are addressing

Funny, I'm trying to get rid of the steep angle of attack at the moment to encourage a better follow-through, seems to be helping (in practice anyway).
I see that delightful fellow Keegan Bradley lost in the Sony playoff in Hawaii, Grayson Murray left Bradley hanging at the end so he had to slink off, hilarious.

After 3 years at Chesterfield golf club it's time for a change. Loved it there, proper club and course but the 60 mile round trip just got a bit much at times.

I didn't think choosing a new club would be so difficult, but after seeing the condition of this place the other day and couple that with it being a 9min drive for me, it's a no brainier.

It's not the longest course, but it's quite tight and technical - https://www.hillsboroughgolfclub.co.uk/
I'm really jealous. Hillsborough GC is wonderful. Played it last year and can remember every hole in vivid detail - that's how you know you've enjoyed it!

What makes it so hard? I googled it and it's not short, but surely not long for a low handicapper, and the bunker side green doesn't look too mean.

Is it a lot more uphill than it looks?
It is uphill quite a lot. I don't mean to brag but as an 18 capper I parred it on my first and only attempt wink It was the first time I'd hit an iron and heard a noise quite like that, the trees around really made it sound like a gunshot.

The only part of Hillsborough that I wasn't so much of a fan of was holes 6 and 7 - they felt a little bit like they'd been taken from a different course.

The blind tee shot on 14 is also very weird and I can imagine there are some real disasters there! hehe You're basically hitting over a steep wall of turf

Great golf this time of year!

Regarding the clothing, surely you need better base layers? No one should need 5 layers, 3 at max?
It's more the bulk of the clothing (I am calling the golf polo as one layer). Most layers are thin but the winter jacket is where it changes to where you feel like the Michelin man and that impacts on the freedom to swing.

I just have to accept this is winter golf.

I do err on the side of caution though as I play worse golf when I am cold, so will generally dress to make sure I am warm . I would hate get cold standing around for 5 minutes on a tee box and you can never guarantee that you could play fast enough to stay warm so I dress accordingly.

Base layers, good socks and a quality, real wool hat, all help.

I have a lined golf jumper, and it's so warm, I'd argue it's almost too warm for the UK. I'd never wear a jacket unless it's raining tbh.

Base - polo - ridiculously warm lined jumper, 3 layers.
Base long johns - golf trousers, and sometimes waterproof trousers if muddy.
100% pure wool hat, good quality socks.

You did shoot +4 though smile

Think I had 5 layers on yesterday also, but all quite thin so could still swing on.

T Shirt
Base layer
Polo shirt
Hoody
Gilet

Backed up with a snood and wooly hat I was actually quite toasty at times - until it started raining on the last 4 holes anyway.

Rain is just out of order this time of year!

Had a good foursomes match yesterday, it was an equal match (no shots given/received) and it was halved on the last!

Unfortunately we lost 9.5 - 6.5 overall, but a great day none the less.

I had:

Long sleeve Galvin Green base layer
Polo shirt
Galvin Green 2018 Ryder Cup jumper
Peter Millar Gilet

More than enough! Plus a decent snood/hat. And long thermal socks under normal trousers.

Some people just feel the cold more than others. I used to, I'm not so bad now. When we went to the range back in December (November?) you commented something along the lines of that it was a cold night, or that you were struggling to warm up, and I remember thinking that I could've actually taken my jumper off and just played in a t-shirt! We're all different. I'm the opposite, actually, I struggle in the heat much more than I do in the cold.

170 straight is top tier on trackman

Toptracer registers 10mph more for me for whatever reason

Couple of USB hand warmers in the trouser pocket works wonders this time of year.

Yeah I get about 158-162mph on Toptracer and I don't think I'm that. 152 tops, I reckon.

It just a 1/4 zip with a thermal windproof liner, really toasty....all brands sell them, Sunderland, proquip, Peter millar....just bought a kjus which I have to throw on and get out of the house ASAP as its so hot, that with a down gilet and mittens sorts me out
