It's referenced in a lot of literature that a .22 has the power to enter a human skull, but not exit, so it ping pongs around inside shredding everything.
How true this is, I don't know. I did talk about this a an ex-SF person I know, and he just raised an eyebrow.

A .22 rifle or pistol fitted with a moderator (especially if it's firing subsonic rounds) is as quiet as it gets and the guns themselves are small, light, easily concealed and have a decent magazine capacity, so make ideal assassination tools so long as you're prepared to get up close to the victim (which the Mafia have always tended to do).

Gangsters, or wannabe gangsters as fashion victims, and always have to have the latest cool bit of hardware.

The Mafia guys in the 60's would have check out what was good for silently bumping someone off, and read that the Special Forces guys used .22 pistols (used in WW2, and well into Vietnam), such as the Hi-Standard 22 pistol with silencers, on humans and dogs. So that makes them cool, and would thought that was good enough for them.

Although the US Seals guys did use a modified Smith & Wesson 9mm with Sub Sonic ammunition in Vietnam, which got called the Hush Puppy.

Also, .22 rifles with subsonic ammo are near silent. You can shoot a rabbit not 3 ft from another and they won't even realise.

The loudest noise on a 10/22 is the action. Absolutely air rifle quiet. These can be fully auto in the states, which is bloody lairy.

(Jebus! that accent hehe)

A .22 can go through a rabbit at 120 Yards, so whilst not lethal; they could make one hell of a mess (and thats only with subsonics)

A .177 can easily do the business at 170 yards though, but they make a much more distinct noise.

Any of the rifle bods on here a member at Wimbledon Park?

They look the most local to me and I sent an email through the website a week ago but had no response. Would like to know if its just a quiet time for them and I need to be patient or if they didn't get it at all?

Just sent off my application for a shotgun license.

Looking at an AYA number 2 SxS sidelock 12 bor to use for game shooting.

Also like clay shooting and would like to get an O/U in future when finances allow.

All very new to it and would like to come to a Pistonheads clay meet if possible.

AYA are decent guns, i have an old AYA yeoman i love it.

You might look at just an O/U, they are welcome game shooting and would double up for clays etc too.

Very true.

The friends (who invite me along to their shoots) all use old SxS guns and I quite fancy learning to use a traditional SxS (i.e. peer pressure/want to be one of the gang he he he).

I figure I can rent an O/U at a clay ground in the interim.

I saw your guns in your earlier post. Very nice! I have used a Silver Pigeon at Bisley - lovely gun.

I'm not a member of Wimbledon, but I had the same problem when I tried to email my local club. In the end I managed to find a phone number & just kept ringing when they were due to be open (in my case, between 7 & 10 pm)

Just half an hour down the road is Weybridge Rifle & Pistol club....there is a small waiting list to join but you could just pop in one Monday night and Myself or SMACK could give you a tour. Being an ex pistol club we have a multi discipline range with turning targets etc, plus regular Bisley visits if you want to make some BIG noise.

weybridgerpc.co.uk

Some of our fullbore kit that we shot at Bisley last week...

Thanks for the offer. I may well do, though I feel that more local is going to be better as I will be trying to fit it in around everything else ...

What time on a Monday evening is a sensible time to arrive?

I have shot fullbore at Bisley a few times and very much enjoyed it, though I was really thinking about smallbore at the moment.

7-7.30pm is probably best, before it gets too busy. Ask for Dan or Stuart.

You can shoot smallbore 3 days a week there, which is useful to fit it around your life. Quite a few clubs opening schedule is quite limited, which makes it a bit of a pain if you have a busy life.

Hello everyone

Went and shout a round of 70 with some real tuition on friday. Had an eye dominance test, was told to shoot with both eyes open.

Shooting with a beretta 686 which wasn't entirely comfortable.

I was very tight the first part of the lesson. And the more i missed the worse it became. Had a safety lesson aswell so the FEO can check that.

Moved onto 28g carts from 21g's and my shoulder is now bruised hehe

Cabinet was installed too yesterday. That certainly wont be going anywhere.

Been eyeing up a lanber sporting deluxe. Seem reasonable at around £500 s/h.

I dropped a couople of my old hammer guns off at a dealer/smith yesterday to get them deacted, real shame as both are pretty and great quality guns but just knackered frown

He also looked at my Coggie while I was there and told me i'd got a bargain smile decoded the proof marks too so I know it was made between 1907 and 1925. He also commented on how tight it was and that it's never been messed with...AND is in it's original proof! So the plan is to get the barrells honed, have the chambers taken out to 70mm and then re-prooved.
