That’s a good deal!

RE Harrison blanks - I haven’t used their fly rods but I used to have one of their 11ft Canal Special float rods, which was lovely, if excessively fragile at the splice.
Shame though as I think Andy missed out on it.

I don’t know about the durability of this rod, but it feels very nice, been doing some more practice casts with it, it responds very nicely indeed.

Friend of mine has one of their GTI match rods and swears by it. I think the canal rod just pushed it too far, very thin walled and not enough reinforcement where the solid carbon tip was spliced in.

I do think many fly blanks also push too hard, they’re incredibly light and strong but terribly vulnerable to impacts from beadheads.

I think the Greys reel is now replaced with the GTS500, which is around £42 new, and the Sonik is around £140 new.

I know there are a selection of other bits, but I’m not sure it’s worth £225.

That’s just my opinion of course.

Sorry I missed off the Vison Koma reel which is around £75 too.

Perhaps it’s not such bad value after all.

Thanks for that bud. I think rather than trawling over used stuff, I should just get some new tackle. I'll call a budget of £1000 all in to start with.

Sorry if I'm being a pain in the arse, but I think I've reached peak rod' n reel today, and seem to be going round in circles!

No worries you have bit to get something that you like and want, it will make you want to get out and use it even more!

You can get an absolutely fabulous complete setup for a grand Bud!

Knock your self out.

But the question is, what will you choose?

What do you recommend then bud? I promise I won't blame you when the other half asks me what I've spent it on. You guys have stacks more experience than me, so pick me some stuff biggrin
Honestly, there is so much to choose from, I'm not after the latest/greatest, just some good decent gear to get started and build from. The 1k includes everything, maybe two rods and reels at different weights as has been suggested before, or one rod and reel for reservoir/lake fishing. Bloody head is pickled with fly fishing stuff haha!

And I’m still looking at these myself, I’m very drawn to a small package that I can take with me where ever I go.

And as I previously posted this is on my shopping list too, don’t really know why, I just like the whole compact smuggler design, but also the brand quality, but I’m sure BB and Coppice will tell me I’m just dazzled by the brand headlines.

I don’t care I still fancy it!

I can’t help thinking that when I have one, I will take it out at my chosen beat, and think to myslef, “ it’s a bit of alright that! “ and I will have a good day on the water no matter what.

The Orvis Encounter outfits are very good value for money and you can trust that it'll all work together. The 8ft6" 5 weight's a very versatile rod. As an all-round first rod it'll do most things.

Then decide what else you need.

I have that Sonik SK4 rod. I like it a lot, but it‘s fast. The SK3 has an easier going action.

Yep I agree BB, you have offered a great option there.

Plus they are reduced to £149.00 for the outfits too.

So two complete outfits for £300. Bargain.

And just because I’m a Greys fan I would also look at their combos too.

I think a Power and a Light version in the weights would be a great balance.

Again only £350 for the pair.

We are positively saving you fortunes!

Enjoy what ever you choose.

The. Greys combos are slightly cheaper here, but not in stock.

So unless you are prepared to wait, it’s off to one of the big boys like Sportfish, who I have bought quite a lot of my gear from, in their Hereford shop, which is a dangerous place to browse, let me tell you,

Or John Norris , another great online shop, but they do bombard your inbox with a few too many emails !

Bought one of these about 5 years ago..................

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXwC2d9VgEE

Serves me well on my river. Added bonus is the extension section hidden in the butt that's can be added on without having to break the reel and line down. I use the extension piece when only a lengthy roll cast will get me over a fish.

Also have an Orvis Trident TL 8'6" 5 weight which is lovely to use.

Thanks again for your help and guidance guys. Those Orvis or Greys outfits are good value, and yes, saving me fortunes Nigel! I think pints of beer are in order when the pubs open smile

Just sat here with a brew deciding if I'm an Orvis or Greys man.

Your welcome bud!

I’ve got up early, walked the dog, made breakfast, had several brews, made my packed lunch, and trying to decide if I would like to take my jetboil with me to have a brew by the river!

So it’s time to fish again.

Oh and I can’t answer the Sportfish or Greys?

I just really like my Greys gear.

Excellent, do it. Which weights do you reckon then for two outfits? I've lost track!
