The Swimming Thread - Pool/OW

I have been reading through this thread having started swimming 1-2 times a week 4 months ago.
I've only started swimming regularly to be able to do an ironman this summer. I've always enjoyed swimming in a casual way, with the kids or on holiday etc and counted myself as a strong swimmer.
However what I thought was going to be the easiest and most enjoyable part of an ironman has turned out to be really tough. After about 1000m it feels like I'm swimming through treacle whilst other just glide past. It's the part of triathlon training that I actually don't want to do and have to drag myself down to the pool to do it.
All I can say is a have a new found respect for swimmers especially those that do it for fun.
Horrid isn't it? I did a triathlon back in 2017, I never swam, but could swim (if that makes sense) and I guess my best attribute is that i'm a swimming coach, so I know what I should be doing, but it's tough starting at mid-life as opposed to 7 years old or whatever.I've only started swimming regularly to be able to do an ironman this summer. I've got 11 year olds who can show strapping young blokes a clean pair of heels in the water repeating 100s on 1:30 ! I can't get near them and i'm far from rubbish when I swim in with the tri-swimmers.
That being said, I got back in pool this morning (after coaching) after a lengthy lay off and at my heaviest weight ever and I too was hanging out of my backside after 100m and plodding along at just over 2mins per 100 :-(
Horrible sport
Reading the above reminds me of the recent times PBJnr2 comes back from pool sessions and tells us the training they’re doing. Can’t remember the details but the focus at the mo is on endurance, and they’re doing 200m sets at some ridiculous pace, mixing the strokes too.
Anyway, it seems to be paying off - she’s just come second in the 100BR MC at the Victorian Open, and is now 0.17s off the NSW SB8 U13 record.
But better than that, got to meet and chat with her hero, Ellen Keane poolside, as well as many others. She’ll be buzzing for ages…
Edited to add the obligatory photo…

Thanks
She might use the cap as the second cap - she double-caps to keep her goggles in place so Ellen might go racing under her club cap She also has one of Ellie Cole’s Australian caps and sometimes uses that as a second cap esp when she needs a bit of inspiration or it’s a tough competition.
So much of sport is in the mind!

Just nice for me to pop this in writing (more for myself), but for the first time since we formed (just before covid) the club is in a really nice place! We've got a new coach who's been in the USA for 20 years or something and she's moved back here and working on a voluntary basis but doing more than any paid coach has done in the previous....makes you realise what good people are capable of!
She was a coach of the year out there too and the upgrade for us is so visible, plus really great emphasis on bringing a team together, it wasn't bad, but this is good....really good.

PS Your daughter was on my FB feed this morning on the BBC! (suggested for me....amazing how this stuff works)
BBC sport "From young fan to direct competitor, what a wholesome story" she's getting more famous than Ellen lol!

Can we use a better word for 2min / 100m than plodding 😂 some of us are happy with this time. Horrible sport

Yes, has been picked up by Paralympics Ireland, BBC Sport and also International Paralympics on Insta. Hadn’t realised it’s on FB as well. Not quite what we expected. All that from a random message to a total stranger who had let it be known, in late-2019, that she was on her way to Sydney - that’s how the photo on the beach came about PS Your daughter was on my FB feed this morning on the BBC! Here’s another from this morning…
There’s a regular group - Bold and Beautiful - that swim every morning from Manly to Shelly (Google Maps link below will help) and back - usually a few sessions at different times, but they’re always swimming.
https://maps.google.com/?q=-33.7992699,151.2905155...
It’s about 800m each way and is usually sheltered from the waves but you get to use The Escalator/Elevator, a well-known rip by the rocks, to take you mostly beyond the breakers. Still needs a bit of respect as you come back into Manly Beach.

We’re currently at the Gold Coast for the Australian Age National Championships - PB Jnr2 racing in the MC events which are Fri, Sat, Sun with heats in the morning and finals in the evening. Non-MC events are then through to next weekend.
If anyone fancies a watch should be able to see it here…

We are three events down, for three finals tonight with two more events tomorrow, and one on Sunday.
Obligatory photos to come…

Sorry folks, but 3 golds from 3 finals means an additional post from me. Even the coach got a shout from the commentators as PB Jnr2 was confirmed as winning her third final of the day.
Might be tough getting her back in the pool tomorrow but we’re now halfway through - two events tomorrow, one on Sunday, then holiday time!

However, somewhat frustratingly, the multi class points system calculator being used had fked up. The points everyone saw on the screen, on the official scoreboard, and heard on the live commentary were apparently not the right points.
No idea how all this happened, or why - it’s a basic Excel calc job - but PB Jnr2 has to be content with 1 gold and 2 silver. She’s kinda cool with it all, but it’s a crap thing nonetheless. And she’s still gets to call herself a national champ.
Still, the commentators at todays heats didn’t know and kept referring to her as a ‘three-time gold medallist’ during her races today
