My first ever go on clays today!

only a relatives farm and a man operated jobbie, but was good fun (although not exactly a day stalking!). we were using some spare cartridges, so a mix of 5s, 7s and even some ancient BBs!

didn't do too badly considering i forgot my chokes so had 1/2 and 3/4, rather than the 1/4 and open for close clays!

had a great banky field to shoot on and was great watching them swoop unharmed down the valley hehe

managed to hit a clay with a BB on the second shot (the first shot didn't fire; these were really really ancient) had some nice hangfires too!

hardly noticed any recoil at all and no pain after around 75-100 cartridges (30/32g). (even at one point when there was a hangfire and I was holding the gun slack to my shoulder) a revelation now I have a properly fitting gun.

Buying some clay cartridges tomorrow biggrin

My cartridge of choice is the Kent Velocity. A 'good' load.

Mole Valley Farmers (we have an account) do Eley Express English Sporter 28g for £3.65 for 25. (we have to used Fiber Wads) Has anyone used FOB cartridges? they seem very cheap for game shooting. (no.5 in 30g)

Oh had good fun with some cartridges (OK brand) where the fiber wad hung in the air, so your second shot (and I needed a few) blasted it to bits! biggrin

Missed a fair few today but got most the clays at very long range, so I suspect the Chokes were too much. (and I was crap)

I use Kent Velocity and Hull Comp X as pretty comparable budget cartridges. Quite low recoil.

I use Eley VIP Sporting Fibre for as a premium fibre wad. Quite high recoil and makes a big bang with a lot of confetti but I always feel I score more heavily with these.

I don't have a favourite premium plastic wad yet, nor a favourite skeet load, I've been trying whatever is priced "well".

Are there as many rifle shooting clubs as there are shotgun clubs? Or does the increased strictness on firearms stop them?

Not as many for sure.
But not being a rifle man I haven't researched the places to shoot.

What choke for clays? 1/4 (improved cylinder) & 1/2 (modified) sound about right? Using no. 7.5 cartridges. Very handy having a multi-choke gun, especially as the one I had use of before was fixed full choke...

should be clay bashing again soon, picked up the cartridges for it today... It's addictive biggrin

Oh I see.
Go for it.
Never worried about the price it's all much off a muchness.
I shoot mainly Reg competitions so the price is fixed for 100.
I always shoot in squads makes for a better day out.
Looking forward to your spreadsheet though.

I would shoot in a squad, or even with mates.. but none of them really shoot clays

Not sure if you've had a look at Shootclay but there are lots of groups and locations for you to join in.
Since joining I have shot everywhere in the UK
Going to Prague and Madrid to shoot FITASC in addition to lots of CPSA Reg shoots.
Worth a look.

That would require me actually hitting the clays hehe I bought 'english sporter' clay loads at £3.60 per 25 eek it was stupid not to!

Have some FOB for wabbits, they seem pretty good, will test them when it's not raining sideways...

Ok 1/4 & 1/2 for me, was shooting pretty close, (clays as close as 15 yards) so may try open & 1/4.

I've set it up for rabbits at long range with 1/2 & 3/4 but old one was full so may try that...

Itching to get out now biggrin
