As per the title really. Anyone living there who could recommend any places to really avoid, or really nice places to try and live? I have just accepted a new job and I'm looking at making the move quickly, so if I can cut out looking at places that are in a s**t area that would help.

If this is posted in the wrong section - sorry. It's only my 3rd post and I'm still finding my way around.

Are you looking for town or village life? Where exactly are you working?

There's plenty of nice villages around, and a few nice smaller towns. Then there's Corby.

Actually parts of Corby are Ok these days. The old council estates are rough but the commuter town to the south is Ok.
Kettering is pretty Ok for the most part. The the town becomes ever more like an inner city than a market town.
Depends on where your from. If your heading out of a city then even the roughest parts will seem good.

Where are you working? It's quite a big county, and do you want town or village life?

its a very big county, you will need to give us a clue which part you are looking to move to. I live n and can recommend Brackley which is just inside the northants border with oxfordshire and bucks. But this wont be any good if you are working in corby as its about an hours drive from here....

Working in Brixworth, currently living in Kent. I would need somewhere with decent public transport (OH doesn't drive!), so probably a town. I was looking at Kettering, but it seemed really cheap, but I suppose most places are cheap compared to Kent

Market harborough might be worth a go- I'm afraid I'm no use to you as I'm at the other end of the county

What are you looking at, buying or renting? If you're working in Brixworth I would think either Market Harborough or the outskirts of Northampton/kingsthorpe would be a good place to start as they are both pretty much on the road straight to Brixworth.

although it's an old thread it would be worth having a look at this one for some pointers, maybe PM shnozz too as he moved up here from darn sarf biggrin

wavey welcome to Northants btw

You could also have a look for some old threads here as this subject has been covered a few times before

A lot depends on your budget but there's nothing really terrible in Northamptonshire - some fabulous (village) pubs and A and B roads and in surrounding counties

oh and some good micro-breweries, a couple are really good

ETA: just seen you're moving from Kent you could afford something very nice here, pity about transport or there'd be loads of good villages

Good and not so quite good parts everywhere in the county (and country)

Market Harborough would probably be a good bet if you're looking for a smaller town with good facilities. But I would say that.

You'd have a good commute to Brixworth.

I don't suppose your new contract is with a company connected with F1 is it?

If so there are a few other PH'ers from there that we can put you in touch with to help you decide, one of whom lives in........Market Harborough just across the road from me.

You suppose correctly wink - I half expected a few people from that company to be on here!

I will be renting, and hopefully paying less than I am at the moment. I discovered Market Harborough when I was trying to kill time before the interview, it seemed like quite a nice place albeit with a lot of speed cameras around!

Thanks for the tips and the welcome!

I didn't mean in MH - sorry, should have made that clearer. I did spot the 2 between MH and Brixworth. Not a lot admittedly, but I did cover a lot of miles that day and I might have got my roads a bit mixed up.

I know. I've been on at her for ages about it, but she's been lucky so far as to her job being within walking / short bus ride of where we live. It might be the kick up the ar$e she needs do get behind the wheel. Only problem is, the only car she likes is a Nissan Figaro rolleyes
