We had a meal at The Butchers Arms, Greens Norton (near Towcester) which I think adequately fits the thread title

They serve a range of foods but we went on Monday night as that's their curry night and I like curries even some English home made ones (such as the ones Mrs Beer makes)

I'd checked their website the food was home made and they had "been awarded 'Highly Commended' at the Great British Pub Food Awards 2010 in the Indian Pub Food Category" only beaten by what's basically an Indian Takeaway

For £6.50 each on offer was a choice of three curry meals and one Thai as the Landlady is also taking Thai cookery lessons, I say meals as the curries also included a pampadom and sundries, basmati rice, half a nan bread and onion bhajl or vegetable pakora

You could also order off their usual menu if you didn't fancy a curry

Just by chance, because it was a BH, I'd had Mrs Beer's excellent home made meat madras for the previous two days - so of course I ordered meat madras (as a comparison test) and extra side dish of Bombay potatoes £1.50

The papadoms arrived with at least one of the two chutneys being home made and the raitha was definitely home made so a good start whilst we waited for the main part of the meal

The main dish was a full sized and full plate of meat madras and basmati rice mound with half a nan bread at the side plus on a separate plate the lovely old style onion bhajl, the madras was very tatsy without being over hot or too spicy

Despite not eating much during that day I couldn't even consider a sweet afterwards

They do lots of others dishes and themed food nights, many at low prices

What?
How was the beer considering it was Cask Ale Week?

The three real ales on offer, one had run out, were good too – no you do not need to drink lager with curries as there’s more taste in well kept real ales

As if I’d forget the beers

So any other places fit the thread title?

I quite enjoy a few places, so I'll just write down the ones I would go to if I were to head out for a meal.

The Brampton Halt is nice during the summer for a bit of atmosphere in the evenings. Often the choice for car meets I organise due to the size of their outdoor seating too. Food is good to average depending on what you order, none of it is bad at all, but value for money is good.

Fox & Hounds in Harlestone is a newly done up place and is actually quite welcoming inside now, the meals are good with a nice variety of platters. Definately one on the list for me if I'm heading out.

The Red Lion at East Haddon is also a server of very good food, only been there 3 or 4 times and I can't remember exactly what I had, but I do remember it was nice!

Balti King!! Very good curry and can pay about £16 for two people to eat there smile

Voujon. Another Indian out on Long Buckby, slightly better than the Balti King and in a nice environment as well. Plus if I stay longer and let food settle I can have a nice little blat down the country roads on the way home wink

That's about it really, not a load to say on each but I'm late for work!!

If you like the Red Lion, East Haddon then perhaps for better value especially if they're still doing the midweek special - 2 courses for £15 (Tues-Fri) is

Griffin, Pitsford

I've heard a lot of good reports about their full price menu too

But don't tell Nick as he left he Griff to go to the Red Lion

Sauls yikes and redecorating the bar, Paul's making too much profit

Mrs Beer says he also has Sauls pies and pastys

Matt, 10% CAMRA members discount Monday and Tuesday nights did Paul tell you

I've just added the Facebook link to the Ade's entry on Northants Pub Guide

The Northants CAMRA beer bus is going that way on First Friday Four (pubs) May 7th
taking in not only the The Boat Inn, Stoke Bruerne but also Wootton WMC (a WMC that thinks it’s a pub), Navigation, Cosgrove and one other pub I can’t remember

We’ll eat at one of the pubs and drink real ale at all of them

Some lucky people will be collected from the Malt Shovel Tavern, Northampton so will get an extra pub in

ETA: I’ll guess at fourth pub being Barley Mow, Cosgrove but I could well be wrong

EFA: I am wrong, the fourth pub is the Globe, Hanslope in Bucks. !

Yeap Navigation, Cosgrove is the one on the bridge

The Barley Mow, Cosgrove is a short way down the Grand Union in the village but a slightly longer way by road

It's an Everards pub with the landlord having his own beer FGA brewed at a micro brewery in Derby but it wasn't there when we went in

Bar food and beer at the Navi is excellent, good choice of guest ales. Will be taking the parents to Camerons @ The Navigation once I've sorted some cash from my new job, will be interesting to see if their fine dining experience is as good as the pub.

I'd also recommend the White Hart at Grafton Regis, great pint of Abbot and lovely food. smile

Let us know how you get on with Camerons as the prices might be a bit more than we're used to spending now but could still be excellent value for good quality or even good value for excellent quality

The White Hart Grafton Regis looks a bit different to when I last went there

I've still not had the GK Abbot Reserve from the cask I'm told it tastes like Abbott used to many years ago but stronger at 6.2% ABV

Will do.

When were you last there? Whilst it was still the 'dump on the hump'? I've eaten there regularly for about the last 8 years and its always been good. About 6 months ago they went to a single menu rather than the bar and resturant ends, doesn't seem to have suffered from it.

The Navi had Abbot Reserve on over X-mas was bloody fantastic, can't comment if it tastes like it used to as I'm only 25. smile

We stopped at the Boat not so long ago on one of our PetrolheadNirvana runs. Food was good value, I had fish and Bev had a roast, portions were a good size and they managed to cook everything well, service was a little disjointed and slow, but then i guess on a busy Sunday lunchtime having a group of 20 turn up out of the blue (reserving tables less than 30 minutes before we arrived) that can be excused. Been in for beers in the evening too, usually on the way home from Towcester races. We used to go to the Navigation Inn across the bridge quite often, but since trying the Boat we haven't been back there, although both are nice to sit outside in the sun.
