Is it true that there are no fishmongers in Northamptonshire other than supermarkets ? Have spent ages searching and I can't seem to find one anywhere. Nearest seems to be Hobbs in Market Harborough - has anyone ever been there and is it any good ?
I don't mind using supermarkets (people have recommended Morrisons for fish), but it seems to be a bit hit and miss, or maybe thats just the nature of things from the sea .....
I would just like to find a decent reputable fishmonger in the area - does anyone have any ideas ?

Hmmm, the more I think about it the more I think I am wrong but there used to be a fishmonger in the old marketplace, I am sure I am wrong now, something tells me it's an art gallery now.

Yes, there used to be an indoor fish market didn't there ? I think it closed soon after we moved here.

I didn't know there was a place in Denton and can't find any details - do you have an address/website for it Di ?

Not sure about norhtants but a little trip across the border to Market Harb and you will find one, but you need to get there early before they sell out. It's near the church in town.

It came up on google maps when I was looking earlier, so I have no idea if it's still there or what it's like

Just asked Mrs TT and she says some of fish from Hobbs is frozen but the fresh stuff is good.

Best to get there early as they closed early afternoon.

Yes, that's the closest I could find Matt. Which is the butchers down the road ? There is a butchers on the same site as Delizzimo apparently http://www.thebestbutchers.co.uk/. I know Di and Tracey were talking about a place near Fenny Stratford (I think), is that Frowey's ? I've been using Sargeants at Weston Favell for meat lately, they seem quite good but I'm always open to other suggestions - especially now the weather's better and Matthew's at playschool in the mornings - I like to have a purpose for my hoons !!

Froweys is great, it's in Little Brickhill,
The butcher, wally always remembers me and always seems keen to help,
I am the 'Lady from Northampton' so that'll really confuse him if someone else from round here starts using them hehe
Not over keen on the sausages from here, but everything else has been sublime

Good Idea!! Hadn't thought of that.

For butchers we use the farm shop just down the A361 at Byfield. The pork was until recently skipping about in the field behind our house. The lamb & beef are all local too. He has quite a bit of game too, ie rook!!

If you do decide to go the shop is just adjacent to the Old Grammar School which is on stilts. On the opposite side of the church to Lloyds TSB.

It's also next door to an excellent butchers - Bates - known locally as Eddie's

There's also a farm shop at Staverton - good eggs and meat, although veg seems expensive to me.

On the first Saturday of the month there is a farmer's Market in Daventry, which is pretty good too.

Well I took a pleasant hoon over to Delizzimo at The Best Butchers today and came home with some mackerel, some mussels and a few huge (and very pretty) tiger prawns. I shall let you know what the critics think later ....
