Hi All,
If you have a mo, could you give me your honest opinion of Kettering + the area around Stamford Road linky
Mrs DM has decided she’s bored at work and may wish to move (from Sth London) to somewhere else.
I mentioned, Barcelona, Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland – she has Kettering in mind for some reason – admittedly she’s found a rather handsome old vicarage that needs a little work, so before I agree to trek all the way up there, anything I need to know?
Any decent independent schools for +4’s within 30mins rush-hour radius?
I’ve tried to find info on the area, but all I keep finding is ‘it’s better than Corby’.
Thanks in advance,
D.

It's not actually better than Corby any more as Corby is undergoing major regeneration. Kettering is degenerating.
Stamford Road is an arterial route out of the town and is bounded by Council estates with the usual baggage that goes with that although it's not all as bad as that might imply. Quite a pleasant aspect as there's a fair bit of greenery and flowering trees etc. That old vicarage is a fair old pile...loads of potential

Many thanks. We’re in Croydon at the moment, you may have heard of it... I’m sure the local council estate tenants are gentry in comparison to ours.So you know the property, is it a mess?
Actually, as Kettering goes it's not a bad location at all.... literally 2 minutes until you're in countryside and some cracking villages within 15 mins (and less). I'm not the best person to comment on schools but there are independents and even a couple of state schools that seem well regarded in/around the town.
Some cool roads for hoonage within easy reach too

Do not put Kettering down! (I'm only posting because one reply was so biased)
When I've worked away from home in the past, I've stayed in some lovely Cities NOT! I've also worked in London and lived just out side so I can make some comparisons if the poster wants.
- I do not live in Kettering town centre any more (near to Kett) - but there is much more of an argument about the down side of Corby so do not encourage it!
I have some relatives that still live in Corby and friends, having stayed there for a while with an ex-girl friend I have a pretty non - biased view.
Poster - your likely to get some differing views on this subject which I've always found strange as the facts speak for there selves.
I suggest you just do your research (maybe not on here) - that's not to say I disagree that Corby is spending money to improve!
Give me a PM - if you come up here I'll give your a tour a round. I know Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough well enough!
That's not to worry you as Northants is a lovely place, especially some of the surrounding villages.
Who was putting Kettering down? The guy was asking for a view and he got one from someone who grew up in one of the towns mentioned and then worked for 16 years + in the other... I quite like them both in their wayWhen I've worked away from home in the past, I've stayed in some lovely Cities NOT! It's a matter of fact that Kettering is currently in decline and Corby improving. A simple walk through the respective town centres of each will demonstrate that to even the most afflicted sufferer of K-town small-minditis.
Never understood the chip that many Ketteringites carry on their collective shoulders about Corby. The place was (and still is for many) plenty good enough for them to earn their living in after all

Yeah, normally because they have either not thought through their response before bashing keyboard, or realise they have made a tit of themselves for some other reason. You seem to have an innate ability to consistently get a foot in both camps.Post count of 146 and I bet 50% of those have been deleted

Matt - Are you some kind of weak individual that helps people then jumps on the band wagon insulting them!
If some one deletes a post it is for good reason, thought it was in appropriate, getting out of hand or the questions already been answered.
It's easy to respond to a post immediately because we all have feelings - then think we maybe should not have said that.
A lot of people do not post for fear of people who read through post purely to extract the smallest detail to pick on an apostrophe of what ever -
Matt - I'm aware I may meet some of you one day are you?
Amazing what you can find when you delve into temporary internet files If some one deletes a post it is for good reason, thought it was in appropriate, getting out of hand or the questions already been answered.

I do not agree with the Slough comment - I've briefly been to Croydon but visited other parts of London quite regular (we stayed in and around slough for one a 1 year project)
Maybe Rob.. lived in Windsor near Slough? Admittedly if you can choose where you want to live there are loads of nice/r places , Bedfordshire, Bucks and Herts for sure offer some very beautiful property and surroundings.
When I moved to live down that way - Slough was part of my territory, which to me having travelled previously and stayed away lot's in a job looks more like parts of Birmingham to me.
You probably will find things around here quite different - depends what your about I guess.
There are some ok villages round here and some very nice ones if you look about too.
- When I moved to back Northants it gave me a lot more free time and a chance to do things I enjoyed again.
Down there always seeming to have to drive for some time, tube etc.. to get some thing plus higher fuel and food costs! The wife was used to it, but I found it tiring.
That said Northant's is not my prime choice and is steadily getting worse but is central for my present occupation. (Good for motor sport related work)
I may move to a sunny place in the future. Where did you say Barcelona? sounds expensive
Oh and nice car
