Does anyone know of anywhere in the South Northants area I could take my 15 year old son to teach him to drive? Not on the public roads obviously - so ideally a large private car park, airfield, or similar...

I was originally going to say Milton Keynes....most of the drivers there are under the age limit anyway.!!

But seriously - there are a number of car parks there you could try.... or try approaching the people at Finmere (where the sunday market is) Nr Buckingham.

Good luck. smile

I'm in Silverstone - but anywhere within 10-15 miles would do...

The Finmere suggestion is worth a look - it seems to be owned by the "Tredwell brothers" - so I might try to contact them...

A chat with the owner of Turweston airfield might be worth a try, loads of people used to go up there and do it, but I don't know if you will still be allowed in.

I tried Turweston last year - wanted to "find the limits" of my VX. But they've stopped doing it.
Thanks anyway.

Baz. If you've got a 4x4 try Whaddon near Milton Keynes, £20 on the gate and there is some flat ground at this time of year down the back where you could try the basics. They let anyone drive there. Voice of experience here after getting pulled out of a very big hole by a 12yr old in a Manual Land Rover

Look up the under 17 car club, they have branches around the country. It's an organisation that aims to teach youngsters in the 14-17 year old range the skills needed to drive on public roads.

I'm not looking to pay someone else. Mrs MV6 used to be a driving instructor (in fact she used to teach young drivers up at the circuit), and we still have dual controls fitted to the Festa - just need somewhere to drive it.

My 4x4 is only a pretend 4x4. frown And it's not the one fitted with the dual controls - so it would be a little more scary handing the keys over to the lad... eek But for £20 that looks well worth a try sometime just for the fun of it - for me, not him! cool

How about the long section of road opposite the wood yard in Silverstone? It just reaches a dead end around the back of the circuit. The road has hardly any use past the few houses at the cross road end. Probably not a good idea late on a Friday night, all sorts of high jinx happen along there biggrinbiggrin

I know just where you mean (although the wood yard is now a housing estate!) - well worth a look.

I also managed to successfully access one of the other locations mentioned earlier in this thread, which was both open and ideal for the purpose. Feel free to PM if anyone wants details...

Baz.
