Hello all, I am new to the area and would like to take my wife out for a very special dinner. We like french, italian, modern british etc not looking for indian, chinese. We moved from London so I am not expecting miracles in the area, but would prefer something which is more than a pub with good food. If such a place exists in the northampton area, please let me know, thank you in advance.

Not in Northants but in a roundabout way down the road.

I'm sure some others that have sampled what the area has to offer will give you a better idea closer to home shortly.

The Stuffed Olive on the Wellingborough Road in Northampton is pretty good.

If you can bring your self to eat Thai and you aren't squeamish about external appearance (of the restaurant) then River Kwai on Barrack Road is just about the best Thai food I've eaten outside of Thailand. 01604 627344

Enjoy :-)

Edited to add - just twigged the word 'special' in your post. Not sure the River Kwai would be quite the thing... :-) but it's definitely worth it for a 'not special' occasion!

Raymon Blancs in MK is fantastic - just opposite sainsburys
Loch Fyne either next to the above or in Elton - on the way to P'boro
French Partridge is pretty good though a tad expensive
The Plough - bolnhurst is very good
The Mill at Oundle is also pretty good

We go alot because it is so close and not as pretentious as The Horse and Trumpet.
But recently we have not been overly impressed (or as impressed as we were the first couple of times).

The food has become somewhat flavourless and my veg tasted a bit fridgey. Which means its been blanched, refreshed and refrigerated. Then reheated to the table. Not the best in my view for the bill size.

Have you told them that? Please do as places like this may not be aware of th chef getting lazy and the effect it has on the food.

Bloody hell... £25 for full English brekky on Father's Day?! £55 per head for a 3-course meal? Sorry if I appear shockingly crass or common by mentioning the prices (sarcasm intended), but that's crazy (and probably cheap compared to some even more insane restaurants). Their special offers aren't too bad in comparison, at least (£25 for a 3-course lunch).

I paid £4.95 for a Sunday carvery at Overstone Manor on Bank Holiday Monday... lovely setting and a great carvery!

Sorry folks, just venting a bit. I did pay about £130 for a romantic Valentine's Day meal for two a few years back at a rather nice restaurant/steak house in New York and it was the best-tasting food I'd ever had. Mine you, that price included drinks and tip.
