This time of year is a bit weak for hooning, but having not lived here too long I want to explore the tarmac a bit further in the spring, as all i see at the moment is dual carriageway and traffic lights!
So what are your favourite routes in the area to go out for a leisurely run? I have absolutely no idea of any at the moment as I haven't really taken the opportunity to get out on the open road, and any good base routes to explore would be greatly appreciated!

I quite like going off out on the Welford Road hooking a right at some point and coming back on the Harborough road (A5199 and the A508)
Used to live over by Santa Pod and absolutely love the roads over that way, mainly as I know them so well, Santa Pod to Kempston Via Harrold was one of my favourites
The roads over by the back of wellingborough are also tres cool, I don't know them well but they have been covered by the Northants runs quite a bit, there is one called the mad mile, but I always forget where that is.
However I am easy to please, I get excited when I have to go through MK in the Lotus Roundabouts

Head out towards Uppingham and follow the B664 back towards Market Harborough.
Turn off left(really straight ahead on a sharp bend) towards Ashely and follow that road back towards Middleton and Corby.
Loads of great roads around the Northants/Leics border.
My favourite is the B664 all the way from MH to Uppingham. Mind the hump back bridges if you don't want to catch some air.

Get a good scale road atlas or map as there are loads of good B and unclassified roads in Northants and surrounding counties
A good one for cars with a steering wheel and gears and if you want to see villages and have an entertaining ride between them is the old B4525 which is now declassified
The old road starts at Kislingbury through Litchborough and Morton Pinkney then it ends at the existing B4525 (which has a safety camera nearby on the existing B4525 which can be another good road)
Within a 5 mile radius of that junction are numerous great pubs to have a relaxing pint and snack then do the same run back to Kislingbury
No need to wait for spring as there are many fine days during winter (I must remember to list them for Alan with his SORN)
Get a CAMRA Good Beer Guide, pick a village pub, look at your map and take the back roads to get there you can't help but find some good roads as there are so many in Northants especialy for a car like yours - waiting for Spring

Some of these go through Northamptonshire - all are worth a visit!

+1 for what he said. I live south of Daventry, and this is often part of my runs out. That and the Banbury-Daventry and Banbury-Southam roads. The old Banbury to Warwick road was also voted as one of the Caterham owners best roads in the country.A good one for cars with a steering wheel and gears and if you want to see villages and have an entertaining ride between them is the old B4525 which is now declassified

Sounds ideal, will get myself an OS Landranger for the area I think, and go for an adventure!A good one for cars with a steering wheel and gears and if you want to see villages and have an entertaining ride between them is the old B4525 which is now declassified

I only really know routes 1 and 4 of above but would generally recommend them with the comment that roads like A605, A43 and A47 are only interesting for short distances unless they traffic free and the A427 is interesting but you can be held up by slow traffichttp://www.sjmmarsh.f2s.com/Caterham/blats.html
Steve
however the bit - 'As you come to Morcott, take a left turn just before the petrol station (B672) to Caldecott - a great road with a mixture of sweeping bends, good visibility straights and 90 degree corners'
and in reverse
And you could make a route that includes best part of a Northants Hoon I done:-
joining the B645 (*) just outside Higham Ferrers follow, then
just after Kimbolton village sign T/L onto B660
follow road until it bears left to become B662
follow to A605 roundabout, straight over to end T/R follow to Oundle
at Church T/L and bear left onto A427
turn off left at r/h bend in Lower Benefield
thro' Brigstock and Grafton Underwood to Cranford, T/L
towards Junc 11 of A14 but go over and join A510 to Finedon
(*) if there are a lot of bikers on the B645 take it easy as they could bring the police with them, not that you need silly speeds on these roads
Matt may still have the details including SatNav pionts? directions? but why he needed those when he had Di to navigate I don't know
firesaftedave done a good run in that area too
I've been on some great hoons but I can't remember the routes we took (I'm very old)
sjmmarsh, try this amendment to your Wansford route:
1. Go over the bridge, at the junction go left.
2. Take the SECOND left towards King's Cliffe.
3. At the t-junction, go right. Watch out for SERIOUSLY slippery roads when it's wet and you go into the little forest. Seriously.
4. Turn left at the T-junction which puts you on the A47.
Edited to add, it works well in the opposite direction for the other blat going via Wansford.

Thanks Spokey - you are right, the back road to Kingscliffe would be a better one to include than the A47 link, although with some sideroad-free straights, it can be good for a full bore overtake. Not during rush hour though....1. Go over the bridge, at the junction go left.
