Anyone going? (I know it means venturing into Wellingborough, but think of the thousands of pounds of improvements that could be caused if they fire the Jet Car up)

Because I'm an old man and I can see/hear attitudes of spectators that worry me and there doesn't seem to be a lot of safety margin if one of the experienced test pilots gets it wrong.

Certainly wouldn't take any of my cars along and abuse them for the benefit of other people.

Wouldn't want to stop it though. Grat opportunity for some Darwinian behaviour wink

Hi TyreTread
This isn't an event for anyone to take their cars along to...

For those who don't know.... Santa Pod Raceway, in partnership with Wellingborough Borough Council, take over Wellingborough Town Centre for the evening on Friday 29th August

Loads of entertainment in the pedestrianised zone... plus the one way system becomes a parade circuit for race vehicles for an evening... WITH STRICT MARSHALLING AND SUPERVISION!!!!
Previous years have seen a wide variety of race cars and bikes doing circuits of the one way system then heading back to the market square afterwards to show off to the public!!!

Town centre closes to traffic at 6.30pm this year... Parade starts at 7pm... Entertainment til 9.30...

This is the 4th year this has been run and it gets better every year... Fantastic atmosphere!!!
Gonna be a great night.... so come on... who's up for it...???
(Oh and a little birdy tells me Frosty might just be taking part... oh yeah!!)

Loads of entertainment in the pedestrianised zone... plus the one way system becomes an extension of the track for an evening... WITH STRICT MARSHALLING AND SUPERVISION!!!!

Whilst it's certainly way more organised/supervised than the showing off that takes place at LeMans or anywhere else where steam get let off around motorsport events, and involves way slower speeds than are are often seen, any risk assessment that has been done seems to have been done by someone completely lacking in awareness of where the likes of a crossed-up skyline is likely to end up if the driver's foot slips off the brake or where the debris is going if one of those bike engines rods itself when being held on the limiter...

Hi Pupp!!

It's a PARADE not a race.. therefore speeds are restricted... plenty of barriers, marshalling, police presence...

This is the 4th year the PARADE has taken place with no incidents in the first 3....
These are scrutineered and stickered race vehicles with experienced drivers.... not just anyone off the street can enter their vehicle... months of planning between local authorities and the track go into this event to make it one of the most popular that Wellingborough Council hold...

In these days of Health and Safety gone mad... do ya seriously think the Council and Police would actively encourage it if safety aspects weren't a priority!!!

Up to you all whether you go or not... I know I'll be there... along with thousands more... and we'll be having a great time... as always!!!!

(As a tongue in cheek aside... I find it really funny that local authority organised events are seen as dangerous whereas the "Northants Hoon" is promoted on here...!!!
According to Google The term "Hoon" was first used in Australia at the turn of the 20th century where it referred to a man living off immoral earnings (i.e. a pimp). Hoon was first used with its current meaning (as a shortened form of "hooligan") by Ian "Molly" Meldrum during an interview with Brian Mannix on the tv program Countdown in 1985. Over the past two decades it has achieved widely use to describe any young male or female who drives in a manner which is anti-social towards the standards of modern day society. Generally, a hoon is any person who drives any vehicle dangerously and/or fast.... Hmmmmmmmmmm???)
Taking my tongue out of my cheek now and going to hide in a corner.... Hehehehehehe!!

I just have this inkling in the back of my mind that events like these promote, in the minds of the "less fortunate", an attitude that there is a right to have possession of a powerful vehicle and to use it in a public place in a way that may be a danger to others. It may not occur to them that the event they are seeing has been risk assessed and heavily marshalled etc ( although I'm with Pupp on tbe apparent risk assessment hown on the video).

As for "hooning", perhaps you are right about there being little distinction between us and hooligans. wink

I'm sure someone will pop up and argue that many PH'ers are no better than the "less fortunate" I mentioned above but the PH'ers will be in their own vehicles and expect to be dealt with by the law if they choose to break it.

Having said that, I hope that everyone attending has a good time and everyone stays safe.

I never suggested it was a race confused I just commented there appeared to be little recognition that vehicles extensively spinning wheels and holding max revs (however well controlled) have attendant risks for people in close proximity that seem not to have been acknowledged on the evidence of the video. Are you suggesting otherwise?

The fact that these are competition machines means little apart from the fact that many stressed components will be lightened, otherwise modified, or even near/past the end of abbreviated service lives and arguably more likely to fail. You ever seen the damage a broken con-rod does as it exits a crank case, or how a failed bike chain flies? I have and I have also experienced hot rubber and stones being flung far behind burnouts. Whilst I might know and accept the risks associated with getting up close and personal with these activities, I'm not sure the average uninitiated parent will be quite so understanding if/when their 6 year old loses an eye or ends up with part of a clutch basket upside their head.

Carry on... smile

Now then Pupp, you might just have changed my mind about going. That could be entertaining and even more so the grief stricken howls from the parents.

My brother took his 8 second drag car last year - he used his head and decided not to do a burnout but creep around the circuit.

He went on the side of caution - his own decision.

If people wish to stand there - it's at their own risk and take responsibilty for their own safety. If you don't like it... don't go.

It was a super event and very well managed. I suggest armchair warriors and their keyboards wrap themselves in bubblewrap and attend. You're missing out on a once in a year event. Just stand in a safe spot mind. wink
