Has anybody any experience with metal detectors , my daughter has lost a gold earing while out walking and we have a good idea where .
I was going to buy a cheap one from Argos ( £ 20 ) but I have read that this might not detect gold .
Has anybody any advice or better still got one I could borrow / hire for a couple of days .
Thanks
Dale

You will need one with "discrimination" otherwise you will detect every rusty iron nail from the last 400 years. Gold registers a very high number, you will get a good signal and it should be fairly easy to find. Maybe buy the argos one, try it on a piece of gold, if no joy take it back under their 14 day guarantee thing.

Unless the earring has sentimental value is it really worth finding it? A good detector will cost from several £hundred to several £thousand and you wont get many people who have these lending them out.

Thanks . Argos unit may be my best option .
The ear ring does have sentimental value other wise like you say its not worth the hassle , she had not worn them at Uni so she didn't risk loosing them .
Sods law .

Oh FFS, do you know where you lost it roughly? If its not like looking for a needle in a haystack, I might be able to pop over with my detector and have a quick look. The earings are obviously precious to her so willing to give it a quick go. PM me.

Thanks for the PM Dale, I trust you got my reply. Let me know when you want me to pop over, you should have mentioned the £10,000 reward earlier!
