Right, I've lived in Northampton all my life (well, except for a brief stint in NYC) and I'm sick and tired of seeing all my favourite country pubs turning into gastro joints... over-priced, poncy food and resaurant-style menus. Recent examples of great pubs gone bad (IMO) are Brampton Halt, The Dusty Fox (now renamed the Fox And Hounds again) and The Brittannia (Bedford Road).

Can anyone recommend a nice country pub that doesn't pretend to be a posh restaurant? I wanna look at a menu and see things like 'Pie and Chips' or 'Ploughmans' and NOT 'Red Snapper on a Bed of Rocket'. I also don't want to see chips referred to as 'Chipped Potatoes'! I'm sick to death of the trend towards snobby pubs and just want a nice, old-fashioned country pub like they USED to be. One with a nice garden and in a nice setting over-looking fields or a river, etc would be nice as the weather is starting to improve.

Cheers!
Ian.

Mrs Beer says last September she went to the Royal Oak, main road Flore and had a very nice home cooked ham, egg and chips for £5 (a friendly locals pub) real ale of course

SB- Nigel says: if it's a proper country pub it wont do much in the way of food - but that's being a bit unrealistic

ETA: Sorry just read the bit about garden and views - can think of some pubs with excellent views but not in Daventry area

George Hotel, Kilsby (01788 822229) just off A5/A361 roundabout

(unless it's changed hands)

Two ladies ran it, very freindly, traditional food, good portions

Sorry but Daventry is a bit of a (decent) beer desert, has been for years, so we don't go out that way much

Sorry but must mention, altho' we've not been since last summer so check first (but a nice drive anyway as off the OLD b4525)

King's Arms, Main Street, Farthingstone has one of the best pub gardens I've been in, the view is the garden (and I don't like gardens, waste of tarmac area to me)

01327 361604

Restricted opening hours (that's the way the guy that runs it wants it)

Home cooked food (may need to book) and interesting bar snacks - cheese a speciality

"Idylic, 18th century pub in an attractive location opposite the church. The L-shaped bar, which includes a comfortable armchair lounge area . . . Full of shrubs and herbs, the beautiful garden is a very restful place (*SB note: if you go at what would be a very busy time the garden may be busy or the Morris Men musicians may be jamming - still there was plenty of room and separation). . . A (small) side room is used for Northants skittles."

Fox and hounds in Risely is still pretty much normal veg and chips
we went to a place in Clanfield that did an awesome ploughmans, and a good drive out too biggrin
Sondes arms in Rockingham is ok for pub grub, and I would think places like the Queen Adelaide would still be oldy worldy
Have a look on the resturant and pub thread too

Cheers fellas... some good suggestions there.

Just got back from the Britannia on Bedford Road (N'pton) for lunch/dinner. Won't be going back there to eat! Over-priced (Tenner for a cheese & bacon burger and chips) and poor service. Forgot the chicken on my girlfriend's penne pasta dish and brought over a small glass of wine instead of a large. Dear oh dear. Hopefully, some of these other places will be cheaper and better.

Cheers,
Ian.

Yes, but what's good for some isn't good for others. I'm specifically looking for a non-gastro, old-fashioned, kinda country pub, ideally in Northampton itself, or the surrounding villages.

Will have another peruse of that thread when I've got more time on my hands.

Cheers,
Ian.

Sorry Ian I'm having a real senior day (well I would it's my age) just reread your OP and I've got no idea why I thought you wanted Daventry area

I go to excellent country pubs but for the quality of the real ale, however Mrs Beer sometimes needs to soak up her beer consumption and forces me to eat too and often she goes out with "the girls" (girls ! least oldest is 40)

Kingsthorpe, Queen Adelaide- large portions

White Elephant - proper Italian style pizzas cooked on premises in pizza oven

Mears Ashby, Griffin - village pub with view from raised front garden

Ravensthorpe, Chequers - (large) fish and chips - view from raised pub garden

Guilsborough, Ward Arms - excellent chips and fresh fish, fabulous former school oposite

Thornby, Red Lion - old village pub (food wasn't brilliant last time but ?) regular classic car and bike meets, you'd be amazed what turns up, trailered vintage racer once when we went)

Ashby St Ledgers, Old Coach House(?) - superb (model) village and pub (not been for a while)

SOTHWICK, Shuckburgh Arms (also same name pub may be worth a visit at Stoke Doyle) - classic thatched country pub (a must) large rear garden next to village cricket pitch

Chacombe, George & Dragon, lovely pub, the village hub, local food (excellent roads to get there too, same roads for :-

Charlton, Rose & Crown, thatched, rear garden overlooks the Cherwell valleys, Austin 10 CC meet there

I've been to all the pubs myself if not eaten there - see also the ones in my other posts

If you wanted excellent pubs that serve no food or less pub-grub style there'd be a few more

Guys, thanks for all the tips smile

Nigel, thanks a lot for that list... I've been intending to pay the Red Lion in Thornby a visit for quite some time; thanks for reminding me!

Cheers,
Ian.
