I've suddenly started noticing a new type of camera that is being installed above a LOT of traffic lights in Northampton. The cameras are mounted atop the traffic light pole and are housed in a light grey casing. Looks like they have twin lenses and 2x infrared(?) panels either side of the lenses. These are NOT the usual traffic-monitoring microwave sensors (which are much smaller, black in colour and have no visible features).

Anyone know what these new cameras are for? I'm assuming CCTV for visual traffic-monitoring or a new type of speed/red light camera (although I doubt it as I have not seen any warning signs to accompany the installation of these new devices).

I've also noticed more and more pole-mounted CCTV cameras (housed in 360-degree privacy domes) cropping-up here, there and everywhere.

Cheers,
Ian.

I'm guessing these are ANPR cameras.

Junction by the Thomas A Becket in Jimmy's End. I THINK I also saw some at the lights on Black Lion Hill (although I maybe wrong about that).

The cameras I'm on about look v.similar to this (but in a grey, instead of yellow, enclosure)...

They may well be traffic monitoring. As Jumplead said, they may be, or have ANPR capability.

Some 'ordinary' cameras can be used for this as my brother inlaw found out recently (insurance xpired, oops!).
