I'm gonna have a go on surfbirds.com this year. nerd

Me and Tina went out on Jan 5th to Summer Leys (Nene valley) and ticked 43 species including Water Rail and Lesser Redpoll.

34 at the moment, Redshank and Snipe at Grafham(same bit where the Wilsons was). There is supposed to be a Firecrest up there according to one bloke - little bird, big place! I'll have a look at surfbirds year list thingy.

A Firecrest was reported at Pitsford yesterday. (while we were at Summer Leys) So, looks like there may be a small influx?

Stunning bird, the Firecrest. I've seen three over the years, including one in Lings Wood, Northampton, circa 2001.

Distinguished from the much more common Goldcrest by it's bold white supercilium. nerd

Not meaning to sound funny, but is that a stuffed bird?

It is pretty.

Not stuffed.

That photo was almost certainly taken during a ringing session.

Saw a Red Kite today circling low over a field near Pipewell.

I know they're clever, like most corvids, but I don't know how good their numeracy skills are.

Cormorants, used to be a predominately sea bird but over the last 20 years or so have really got established inland. If you you to Paxton Pits you will see masses of them, one of the biggest roosts in the uk - look for all the white trees on the main lake. They always remind me of pterodactyls or B1 bombers for some reason. Fishermen hate them.
