Hi guys.

I'm currently living in Oxfordshire, which is all very well. Well actually, it isn't, it's a bloody rip-off.

I've just been doing a few searches of property websites and I see that an NN postcode offers you the same countryside and market towns, but for up to £150 per month less than an OX postcode, which makes no sense to me whatsoever. Put it this way, for less than I'm paying for my poky little 'studio flat' with shared bloody kitchen in Banbury, I could get a two-bed flat with off-street parking in Daventry, and I don't get the impression that it's because Daventry is exactly 'rough'.

Two Northants towns spring to mind - Brackley and Daventry. I'm beginning to think more about Daventry, mainly because it's near Long Buckby railway station and Brackley doesn't have any transport links at all. I may be a petrolhead but I also want to go out of an evening, have a drink or two and not have to stay on a mate's floor, or leave my 'bike parked outside Banbury station all night.

But Brackley is the home of the Honda F1 team, and is closer to Banbury, where I work.

Has anyone got any experience of these two towns, and which would you recommend?

can't help you on those two, we rented in Towcester for a year before moving back to Northampton, really nice place to live, right on the A5 and A43 and only 5/10mins from M1 and Northampton maybe 20mins to the station in the mornings.

But what of the rental costs? I don't mind Banbury but it's a bit pricey, ie in rip-off territory. Is Towcester significantly better value? I've searched the usual property websites and I can't actually find any places up for rent at the moment so I can't really judge it.

>>Actually, I've just found some on Rightmove. It's even more expensive than Banbury!

Whats wrong with Brackley? I always thought it was a lovely little town.

TC, go for the price you can afford, every town has its good and bad areas, search the good areas of the town rather than the town as a whole, think the Pearson bros live over Daventry way, I am sure they will be on later to read it... smile

At the moment I live in Banbury and walk to work. Despite it only taking 20 minutes to get to the office, I realise that I could spend barely any fuel money riding my motorbike for 20 minutes and live, oh I dunno, 15 miles away.

Checking Rightmove with a 15 mile sweep of the area around Banbury, Daventry comes up most often, with one or two around Brackley, a few in Leamington Spa, and one in Towcester.

I can't really do anything about it right now as I'm currently only 1 month into a 6 month rental contract on a miserable little one-room flat with a kitchen shared with a bunch of people who don't speak English. It costs me £350 a month but I reckon I could push that to £400. I'm also going on holiday in just under two week's time, so the earliest I can realistically think about moving is October/November time, if the estate agents have no qualms about letting me terminate my contract early.

Thing is, in Northamptonshire - and I mean in some of the nicer areas too - I could get a proper one- or even two-bedroom flat for, in some cases, less than £350.

I might tag along to a Northants PH meet and get the general gist of the area, but one thing's for certain - I'm not paying a premium for an OX postcode any more!

Iam still going through a relocation to Northants from Southampton and amazed at the prices. I had to start from scratch on research as I knew nothing of the area. I was basically out to find reasonable prices but not chav scum and a pleasant village location etc. The search spanned a huge area and I have learned quite a lot so if you want "newbie" advice, feel free to mail me. If you search within this forum you will also find several threads started by me over the last 6 months or so asking for local PHers advice and a lot of helpful stuff on there. I looked at daventry but only ruled it out as its a fair old hike from MK, which is where my new job is based. I didnt much like the look of teh centre of daventry to be honest, but then I was minded to avoid the centre of any town/city.

Couldn't tell you off the top of my head but on the map of the town it was towards the south west.

Which areas should I avoid?

Bad ares:

Southbrook
The grange
The headlands

the new / good estates are

Ashby fields

Lang farm

Middlemore

Timkin

any of these are nice areas but i would say that middle more isnt one where id like to park my car as it it very narrow on teh street and every inch of the land that been build on has been used, the car parking spaces are quite narrow to so if i were to pick one it would possibly be lang farm or ashby fieldssmile

What about Stefen Hill? It's the area just off Stefen Way to the south. Struck me (on the map and photos at least) to be OK, maybe a bit quiet but that's not a problem

Stefan Hill is not to bad, but jackpearson has it right with his list of the more desirable areas. I'm pretty sure that most of Stefan Hill has off street parking, but there are flats on there which probably have communal car parks (I could be wrong on that)

There are 2 good drives into Banbury. The choice route being Daventry - Southam - Banbury. The next best being the A361.

Daventry is placed well for the Motorways and congestion is almost Nil. There are some great takeaways, and as you already know the train station isn't far. There has been over the last couple of years however a big rise in the number of people who don't use English as thier first language. To the point sometimes when I think I have gone to Poland.

Wherever you end up in Northamptonshire you'll be alright...... It's not too bad!!
