Hello chaps.

You may have noticed from P&P that I am on a long term mission to move somewhere half decent.

Do any of you live around Towcester and it's villages and commute to london *everyday*?

where do you live?
which station do you use? what's parking like there?
do you wish you didn't have to make this journey?

the reasons for this area are:
wife's family in village near rugby.
some of her/our friends in norfamton
i need to get to London and it's sort of on a train line.
i like the area too.
it's near silverstone!

we can afford something quite nice and the train faer if we moved there. i'd quite like to get the wife to get a job in MK/northampton then when we have children we'd be near her family... etc etc.

any thoughts much appreciated.

We used to live in Towcester, there is no train station there, you would have to travel to Northampton to get the train (which is about 15 minutes away with no traffic)

Towcester and surrounding areas are delightful, if there was anywhere in Northants I would suggest living it would be over that way- houses are more expensive (for Northants) but that goes without saying. Its also on the A5 and 7 minutes from M1 so good for commuting by car too.

Will have a think and come back with more info later...

You driving in first gear then? wink

To be fair, it probably is around 20 minutes from towcester to get parked up at MK train station in rush hour.

I know Jo whiley does it every day, from MK station. (she lives near towcester)

The fast trains are 30 mins from MK to euston, or about an hour for the ones that stop at the 8/9 stations on the way

Not sure where you are going to but i used to make it from my house (15 mins walk from MK station) to hammersmith in about an hour and a half. Train to euston, then hammersmith line from Euston square

ETA: near towcester is a nice place to live. MK is also nice if you get a good area, most estates have nice ends and not so nice ends!

I live in Northampton and travel to London every day (got to pay for the car and drink problem somehow!). It's approx 1 hour by train which isnt too bad, the most painful part is the cost - £4500.00 just for the train ticket which doesnt include the cost of parking. Of course this is easily offset against the cheaper housing 'up North' but still hurts when you end up having to stand or sit on the floor on the way home in the evening..... If you're in Towcester I'd recommend travelling to MK to catch it as you're probably going to save £600 on the cost of the ticket and it's a lot easier to get to via. the A5.

thank you all.

i think MK parking is c£900 pa and the train is something like £3700.

not that i have anything against northampton.. but using MK as a 'hub' feels like a better thing to do.

a freind of ours lives in northampton 9yuppy shore apartment thing) and gets does the journey to london each day. she's always tired and they're going to move to london proper. HOWEVER i reckon if i could work it so that I had a nice detached house with a biggish garage and large garden in a nice town (towcester) or village then that would make up for a pance journey.

i haven't been put off yet so that's reassuring!

A lot of people at work (Finsbury Sq.) live in London and it can easily take them 40 minutes to do 10 miles across the city. Compare this with approx 50 minutes from Milton Keynes and house prices at a fraction of those in London and I'd rather do the commute. Well to be honest I'd rather work 5 minutes from home but we can't have everything unfortunately.....

I need to start travelling from Northampton! Is that all it costs?
£6200 plus another £650 for parking from Kettering.
Just not sure i could stand trying to get back from Northampton every night, only 15 miles but a nightmare.

Towcester to Northampton would be a pretty rough journey i reckon. Depends on time your travelling i guess. MK station is a fair old trek and i imagine none to pleasant a journey either. Best looking some where as close as posible to a station really.

(Nothampton sounds very tempting now, that would be another £1500 a year in my pocket).

36 mile a day round trip, 5 days a a week for 48 weeks a year equates to 8640 miles at a very conservative 10p per mile means you end up about £600 a year better off. Then check out the parking costs and the time involved. - Next!

would be an easy journey, most people in the morning are heading the other way, and with the new road that goes from sixfields to by westbridge you cut out most of the bad traffic in town too

Hanslope is a good location to live in; it's 5 miles from Milton Keynes and 8 miles from Northampton, and it's a village.

Other than Hanslope, there's Yardley Gobion, Potterspury, Paulerspury, Deanshanger, Wicken (if you can afford it). All villages, all 5 miles (ish) from Milton Keynes Central.

Another option is to move to the Kettering area. There are some very nice villages; Orlingbury, Pytchley, Isham, Loddington, Rushton, Thorpe Malsor to name but a few.

Kettering is only 51 minutes from St Prancras by train, 40 minutes from Silverstone, 10 from Rockingham.

Motorsport valley....why live anywhere else. smile

I do a commute to work in sussex 6 ish times a month. As long as you have good access to th M40 you're ok, 'cos the M1 is a carpark at peak times. An old friend of mine is an R1 DJ & she commutes daily via the train from MK.

I used to travel from Brackley to London (via Bicester North - Marylebone) not a bad journey but you don't want to be going to the wharf.
