Buying the missus a car Dave?
Must be serious.
Justy is your man for Smarts i reckon. Not heard of anything major qoing wrong with them.
Such a low state of tune std that i would think the engine would last foreverm hardly any power so not much wear and tear on the drive train.
Turbo though so clean oil a must.
Oh and the big thing to watch out for is that the steering wheel is on the wrong side!

I too am thinking that a smart car would be fun once again.
I do love them, but only in their original conception as a small city car. They last well 100k miles without issues, as the Burg said the oil needs to be clean though. My last one I found out the oil had to be vacuumed out of the crank case. With that one I used cheap oil and flushed the black gunk out twice before mobil 1 was poured in. The engine note changed to a much smoother sound. Thats when I set about the 74kw TIK pipes, scoops and fiddling about. Get a good cheap one, and they will not loose money. The worst thing that can go wring is the turbo leaking then leaning out the little motor an holing a piston. £600 buys a new engine. Steering wheels on either side make no difference to the drive. Big wheels make for some good fun, and driving them "fast" is a great sensation, as it takes some planning.
Get one Dave, we can go Smart car racing. I always wanted to go Santa pod with one, just for the smiles.
In fact with the £300 wheels £200 tyres, and remap this is good value...

Mrs Beer had a lhd smart city coupe passion (fortwo to you youngsters) imported and it arrived three weeks before Daimler/Chrysler officially released the UK version
Fantastic fun car, took it on a couple of tours of North Yorks no problem getting to Tann Hill
We went to a smart owners meet and doubled the average age of the owners
Mrs Beer used the car every day and loved it, cabin misted easilty but that was about the only real problem, she average 49 mpg and did not hang about in it, I owned it for a short while and could never park it properly
Now the bad bit the Mercedes build quality and service - don't believe the hype, ask an owner who already sold his more recent Mercedes
There are lots of different models (no really) check out the owners web site for advice

I hope Blipi `aint reading this!
I may give the little f4rt boxes some stick but they are good fun for what they are. Not a long distance thing IMO and you have to get used to the quirks such as the sloath slow gear change but they are a fun drive, economical and small enough to find silly parking spots that other vehicles generally can't fit in!
As a second town car a good thing but would drive you nuts if you are used to performance cars.
Personally I'd go for a good classic Mini!
