A Cars History
Discussion
Anyone know the best way to trace a cars history?
Our Elise is a pretty early one, built at the end of 96 and registered Jan 97, when we were at brands for the Lotus record thingy, Peter showed be his copy of the 'Elise History' book and a few of the pictures in there had the same last 3 letters DAU, just wondering if ours was a press car or anything like that

Is there some way of doing it through the DVLA?
I`ve got a massive folder of paperwork for the Cerb. Bills, MOTs, services etc. All the previous owners in the file, including a certain Richard Hammond!

What ever! Well you would need a head injury to buy that heap with Fecked cams think he was in that when he crashed
I am sure either lotus themselves can aid you here, but just doing a hpi check will give you all the owners a slower process, but they can enlighten you on how many prangs (hopefully none i like you ) its been in and lovely background history like that

You sure about that? AFAIK, it'll tell you how many owners the car's had, but not who they are/were.

GM owned Lotus in the late 80s - early 90s but sold them to Bugatti in around 93/94, who then sold to Proton a few years later.
I think you'll find that contacting Lotus directly would be the first step.
DVLA - if you write them a letter explaining you're tracing the car's history and enclose £5 cheque they'll send you the previous details they have on their records
I've done this a few times, last time with P6 about 3 years ago
If you've got a copy of INS 160 Guidance Notes, which I have
item 2:
The Regisistered keeper can apply for the history of the vehicle by writing to:
Fee Paying Enquiries, DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1AJ
quoting the registration mark of the vehicle and giving the reason for the request.
A fee of £5.00 should be made payable to DVLA
Edited for teacher to make his answer readable
