I've now reached the stage with the Rover where the problem is one of 2 things and in order to eliminate head gasket I need to get the coolant checked for exhaust gasses. Not all garages do it so does anyone know anywhere locally (pref to MH or Kettering) That does it?

A

You could ring and ask JONDEL Motorsport 01604 499300 (Moulton Park = Ket'ring end of N-pton) or Northampton Motorsport 01604 766624

Both would probably know or advise (Monday now I'm afraid)

Once sorted try completely refilling with 4-LIFE, lasts ten years, it's pink so shows location of leaks easier and goes yellow if it get gasses in it - it's worked for me a couple of times

Did you get my email asking for details of use your classic on St Geogre's Day?

The kits to test it yourself aren't particularly expensive.

The AA Alan! They test this on overheated cars

Alan I have popped in a bid on this one...

Can I ask a favour and ring the man for me?

Nigel - Thanks - I did get your e-mail and I thought I'd replied - I'll send again lateror you can pick them up off the P5 website at www.roverp5club.org.uk/events.htm#St.George

GreenV8S - I didn't know you could buy them at a reasonable cost - where? - who makes 'em? I'll try a google!

Justin, I'll take a look. Happy to call him for you or go see it if not too far. Busy tomorrow?

Alan

Don't worry about email I can get info from link above

Good luck with coolant, whatever the outcome I would recommend swapping to 4-LIFE if only because you can hunt down a leak quicker - saved me when an SDI engine started leaking from the water pump if it hadn't have been for the 4-LIFE colour and way it dries out and remains visible it would have looked like it was a small leak from the radiator instead

Will do Nigel once I have established whether the damn stuff is being forced out by leaking head gasket or reduction in pressure by a leak - It's complicated and been going on for over a year now! banghead

It's often called an engine block tester, there are loads of suppliers, for example Frosts.

That type of stuff (technical chemistry term) must be in the 4-LIFE but as the 4-LIFE is the permanent (well 10 years quoted) car's coolant you should hopefully spot it turning yellow before things go too far

Sorry I can't help you Alan with finding the cause of the problem I only know about the blindingly obvious and when whatever went wrong with my cars (if I can remember)

Long life coolant may not be such a good idea in an aluminium engine, the corrosion inhibitors get used up and need replacing at least every couple of years.

Yes good point - I don't know the technical details

You can check with the MG Owners Club as they're the importers Tel: 01954 230928, still worth it if only for two or three years, by the time you add the cost of anti-freeze and distilled (?) water together, as your not supposed to use tap water

I never had to worry about it because almost always just after I put it into whatever car I had at the time it would empty out for some reason, because of this my mate called it "4-NOW"

Edit
Peter, did you go to the ASDA charity day at Bruntingthorpe a couple of years ago?

Indeed it was! The first time was a little 180 deg job but the second was a full 720 and picked it up again on the way out - good fun if a little bit worrying!

I had a Porsche 911 spin onto the grass in front of me when I took a passenger ride in my 4.3 Griff

Next passenger outing a Cerbie went off in front of me big time

The Griff has excellent grip so I had no problems - plus I'm not a good enough driver to go too fast

Edit

I see the P5 club are advertising the Evesham Show if your thinking of going or taking a club let me know as the car side is organised by a Sporting Bear

I hadn't seen the Evesham meet but it might be a good one for the P5 E Mids crowd

First two years the local council have almost sabotaged the show, making unbelievable incompetence believable

David does his best with the cars, had some Rockingham racers the first year

Anything but the cars take with a pinch of salt

Just looked at the details and see it's two days this year we'll go one of the days David, the Show and the charity Noah's Ark Trust www.noahsarktrust.co.uk/
deserve our support

I'm sure we could arrange a few Tivs Loti and a few others if you speak to the local PH crowd nicely. Sounds like a good day out.

Do the exhibitors have to be there early and stay all day for both days?
