A decent old skool curry in Northamptonshire
Discussion
Only people in their forties would have experienced such as I think it's about 25-30 years since I've had one and then they'd have to had lived in Northampton for at least 30 years
By old skool I probably mean less freshly made and spicier where the curry sauce was allowed to mature (fester) to disguise the cheap meat - meat madras was chewy mutton in a spicy tar coloured sauce
Might not sound appetising the way I put it but if you've ever left a take away curry in its container until the next day (an act of ultimate will power) you'll know it always tastes better
To attract more varied custom curries have become cleaner looking, less spicy and literally sugar coated, attracting people who previously “wouldn't eat that foreign muck" (a famous Northampton saying)
I'm glad that these people are now eating curries but they have changed the style of what is now offered, there must be room for at least one old skool place in Northamptonshire (such the Imran Balti Hut when it first opened about six or seven refits ago and Earl Street is for the modern curry eaters)
I know of none in Northamptonshire
Any suggestions, please excluded even excellent modern style curries remember it’s old skool as above that I’m after, thanks

mmmmm...Shaplas, don’t know if he is still about, but he used to let you make your own naan break in the clay oven if you asked nicely. Last time I found him was Field street in Kettering, after coming out of prison for sexual harassment in the old restraint in Market Street. Might take a drive along later tonight to see if it’s still about!
For Italian style there’s Frank’s Pizza in Havelock Street!!

Thanks for info Justin I'll see my Ket'ring curry eating mate Friday so I'll ask him
In the mid-late 70s I used to go to (Ali's) Irthlingborough and Wellingborough but not Ket'ring til the 80s

Not sure if this is your thing but I always go to Little India in Arnesby just of the A5199 between Husbands Bosworth and Wigston.
Alan thanks for the idea, the name sounds good, I know where you mean as I used to use that road when it was the A50 (old person alert!)
Friday we're having a homemade curry at a friend's house and friends that live near Husbands Bosworth will also be there so I can suggest that we give Arnesby a try
I volunteered (doh!) to visit some pubs in the south west of Northamptonshire over the next few weeks so it'd probably be at least late February before we could try Little India so if you visit it in the mean time perhaps you could please let me know if you think it matches the criteria above
Can anyone else please suggest ones in Northamptonshire or just over border ?
Mate's just told me it used to be The Cock pub

Theres a great place in Leicester called T&K's, i've not been for a while but it used to be bring your own beer as they didn't have a licence, sit of plastic moulded bolt together ex-wimpy chairs and eat a decent starter and bloody hot curry for under a tenner. Absolutlely what your saying in the first post about mutton instead of lamb, chewy meat, no artificial colourings, everything is a dirty brown colour regardless of what you've ordered. A proper no nonsense 'ringsting in the morning' curry house.

Thanks for your post, if T&K is down Spinney Rd/St then I've been there a few years ago, either way sounds like my sort of place
I like the curries to be spicy not hero hot but it's good to know they're there if required

My waistline pays testament to having tried most of the places in Bedford. I'd rate India and Saffron as the top two. Thanks for suggestions, are the India and Saffron old skool?
I ask because the Saffrons (not Bedford) I've been in before were modern style
Still not found any in Northamptonshire
Thank you again for the info
I'm not pleading poverty but I do have slightly limited resourses (even cut back on the beer a bit) so I'm targeting old skool
I'm also a bit tight with slightly old working class values so eating out in a different town could only be justified with visiting a pub so the costs add up
Luckily my financier likes eating out and drinking beer so no doubt sometime in the future we'll take your advice both in the Welly but arguing about going in "orangy sign" or the Saffron
Thank you for all your help

"One of the two “gay friendly” pubs in Bedford. In fact it could be claimed that the Clarence is more of a club then a pub, and so the Barley Mow could be said to have rather cornered the market in Bedford. One of the other major selling points to the populous as a whole would have to be the extended opening hours, which have been known to go up to and beyond the 3am mark.
It almost goes without saying that the majority of the people that frequent the place are homosexual, though it should be pointed out that there is a growing number of straight people that go there. This is largely due to the aforementioned lateness within closing, although it has to be said that as a pub on its own merits it is quite a good one. The beer is of a good quality, averagely priced and of a reasonable range. There’s a pool table, and generally speaking the music being played isn’t overly intrusive or abrasive/annoying. There is also the bonus (or drawback) of karaoke upon various allotted evenings.
Has to be said that although the pub is quite large, with a bar that curves around in a horse shoe fashion, through two slightly segregated areas, the toilets are both rather basic and small.
The atmosphere overall is generally very friendly and open. One thing that you should be aware of if you are straight and visiting, is that you may well be labelled with certain terms, such as “breeder”. Even trying the tactic of claiming that you may well be infertile isn’t sufficient enough an argument to stop such terms being thrown in your direction.
Basically a pretty nice pub, and if visited, then should be done so with an open mind."
Been in there many times. Used to meet the high school girls in there.
