Hi, another what car thread..

I have previously owned;

MK5 Fiesta Zetec-S
MK1 Golf Cabriolet
MK2 Golf Gti 8v (fave car of the lot..)
Currently drive a Civic Coupe which was really just a car to tie me over until I could get something decent again. This will be sold.

I have approx £4000 for a "new" car.

Please bear in mind i'm only 20, with 1 years no claims. Insurance is a nightmare.

I want something fun, quick and involving. I was looking at 306 Gti's, MK2 golfs again, clio 172's possibly, ibiza cupra at a stretch? Any other ideas? Something a bit different to the norm would be nice. Running costs arent too much of an issue as the car won't be used all the time..

Before you mention MX5's, i'm sure they're awesome to drive but i'm really not that keen on them!

Mark said that Ben has a porsche 944 and isn't much older than me? is that a realistic idea?

Volvo v40 T4. Very quick, cheap insurance and tops out at 140-145 mph.

great car, cornering and acceleration are fantastic, servicing is a bit steep if you want dealer servicing, insurance will kill you though because of your age and NCB

i've had fairly resonable quotes for a clio 172 actually! i think it's do-able. need to test drive one though as i've not had the pleasure yet

I 'd go for a GTi-6 from your list. Very quick, great handling, cheap to own and a relative sleeper if you whip the badges off.

You can get an S series TVR for under 4k
Mainly Ford running gear.
Insurance may be a problem .
No quicker than a sporty hatch but more fun.

what do you class as reasonable?, do know that if you put your parents on your policy it reduces your quote. Shame you didn;t mention thisa couple of months ago, I;d have taken you out in mine

I'm on my 2nd S and agree with Dale. This is the first one in your budget I saw in the Classifieds - there are plenty more there too!

If you're not using the car everyday may be worth trying a limited mileage / classic car insurance policy.

anything less than £2k is affordable for me.. quotes for 172's come in around 1400. probably more with mods but i'd contact someone whos a "specialist" like flux or HIC - get a better quote then. considering i pay £1600 on my civic it's not bad!!

Careful of the 306GTi. The cambelts are prone to going before their stated service (know 2 people who had that experience) and also they have dodgy electric windows.

I was looking at 944's before I got the 200. You can pick up some nice clean examples, plus it can be a daily driver that is slighty different.

BMW E36 328i coupe = 2.8 straight six lump with 193bhp & 280nm of torque. Rear wheel drive with a limited slip diff for constant amusement. German build quality, refinement and reliability. Insurance isn't too bad and servicing is reasonable provided you stay away from main dealers. They're fairly common, but plenty quick enough and a later 1998 example is easily achieveable for less than £4000!

Edited to say; Don't listen to Stef and her BMW prejudices!

I would recommend any of the following;

Alfa 145 QV
Alfa GTV
Alfa 155 Q4
Fiat Coupe
VW Corrado
Audi Coupe
Seat Coupra

Any of those float your boat?

I've had 2 Corrado's (1 x 16v and 1 x VR6) and they are stonking cars!!!!! The VR6 has superb handling and the performance to match. There's a few on Classifieds but not sure about the insurance. Bound to be a future classic (if not already)....

The Corrado is a vastly underated car, I would love to have a VR6 or a G60!

Doh! I was going to say MX-5!

Can't really comment on the others apart from the Ibiza Cupra, which was quick, but no where near as fun to drive as the Mazda.

Direct line put my insurance up when I added my parents, and my Mum didn'teven drive my car for the first year I had it!
