Take care in that Chim! Sorry to hear you're having a few teething problems but it'll be worth it. Keep us informed....

I know it COULD be lots of things but the only time I know of that this has happened was the sping loaded bypass valve jammed open.

I've just had a new oil sender fitted to the V8 as was leaking a lot. I'm not mechanically minded but thought I'd mention it in case it helps. Dave

Got there much later than I wanted to (around 2.00pm) and immediately got dragged into a guided tour of the house so not only did I miss the hoon but I also missed the sight/sound of them all returning

The nice man from The polishing Company spent about half an hour trying to get the scratch out of the boot - he failed althought its better. Made me feel better that it wasn't as simple as it looked!

Had a whizz up to York neck of the woods though and nearly got my collar felt by the BiB for a slight excess involving velocities!

People may see smoke rising if you look North. Don't panic, it will be Tivi producing flames. But not just from the zaust!

Advice to ya'all. Lotus may have the Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious title but TVR's have been far worse to cope with. 'Towed In Vehicle' any other acronyms to suggest??

The advice to keep 'a couple of grand in the bank' for TVR ownership is a statement all to true. Best bung in a few more quid too I say. MXDi and Matt, please listen to advice which may sound negative if you are still considering purchase, or should that be negaTIV??, don't jump in too fast to achieve TVR dreams. Wish I hadn't.

Sigh. Dream achieved and then shattered... cry

cheers stef, just a question though,
when you bought your chim did you buy from a garage and did you get anyone to look over it before buying?

Well, I've seen some real sheds offered by dealers, and you can't easily inspect inside a motor Having said that, drive loads, look at more... get to know what you're looking for.

If you're thinking of 'investing' in a Tiv, you need to go in with your eyes open. They're not built by modern methods (or even, necessarily, by any methods at all) and can (and do) suffer all sorts of problems. Some are niggles, mere annoyances that soon become part of the 'character' of the car (and which part of the fun can be in sorting), but it is possible to suffer real show-stoppers although my experience indicates that's rarer than some of the forums would have you believe (people tend to prefer to post negative stuff). If you rely on professionals to do everything, it can get expensive as the cars are fairly high maintenance, at least they will soon deteriorate without maintenance, BUT they are not complicated beasts and can be fettled at home if you take the time to learn the foibles and tricks. Afraid the accumulation of that knowledge is why specialists can charge the hourly rates they do.Afraid it's not like buying a Mondeo and there are no guarantees although it is possible to tip the odds more in your favour. Worth it when it all comes together mind

yep, I didnt mean that you are safe either buying from garage nor getting it inspected before hand, I would have no preference to a trade or private car, but we would have it inspected, we know a man (who knows tivs)

This has been a long time coming, plans have been afoot since before last summer to get a chim after we had a test drive,
I should think from what we have to sell, we will have enough money in the pot as it were to put aside for the maintenance, I am just hoping it will be as low as Oggs' rather than high like Blipis could be

I go into this VERY wary, even now I am thinking, maybe an elise would be a safer bet, but I just dont want an elise. Tivs just have an amazing road presence, fantastic noise, 'a' reputation (hehe) and I want.
Its quite scarey going from my safety blanket that is the MX5 (has cost me £180 in maintenance in a year)

Plus would be great to go to stuff like chim fest thumbup

Then you're doing it 'right' I reckon. I've had mine since 2000 and in that time I have wished it to hell and back, but it still makes me grin every time I drive it and has a sense of occasion like nothing else. Being honest, and there's few I would readily admit this to, I've even considered giving up bikes to focus on the Tivs. And trust me, there's precious little that would have that effect on a hardened bikey. Go for it and enjoy!

I did look at and drive quite a few. I also came with a massive check list, trolly jack and a useful friend. Even took her through a drive through water spray booth hand wash place to check for leaks n stuff. History etc was also checked.

She wasn't running as good as she should but since I got a good deal and was willing to throw a couple of grand at her I was very happy. The 'problems' were common stuff like cam wear. (and my god it was worn! Have kept the offender and will make something of it, perhaps not a Tivi smashing stick which was my first thought...)

So after replacing the problems with upgrades while I was there my over enthusiastic power crazy mate decided to take me just over budget to change a few other bits too.

This oil pressure thing is a complete mystery and totally fecked myself and my friend off.

What I/we found with the Tiv is that the technology in them is shockingly old, build quality terrible and the amount of unexpected problems very high. I am lucky that my work has been done labour free. I'd probably be looking at near to a £5k bill for garage work (and I wouldn't of had the oily opportunity to muck in too).

I don't think I have ever spoken to a TVR owner who has not had problems, usually expensive. Whether brand new or old. I know with most British sports cars problems can be expected but sadly the Tiv unreliability and expensive hobby badge seems well earnt.

Don't get me wrong, I still love TVR and have great pride in owning one. However, I have realised it is not a car for those who are on a tight budget. Check the everyday costs for fuel and insurance too. I always rave about little Blipi and after many many car experiences I still hand on heart believe she is the best (unless you are talking silly money of course). For Callander Classics she could also take 2 lots of camping stuff including chairs and pop the hood up and down in her usual speedy fashion. And didn't have to panic about fuel!
