I need to have made a spacer for to bring the steering wheel on my Caterham closer to me as I've run out of travel on the adjuster. I haven't got the steering wheel or boss in front of me so don't know the precise dimensions, but it would be 'polo'-shaped, approximately 20mm deep, 60mm o/d and 30mm i/d. It would need to be drilled to the PCD of the steering wheel of course. I'm guessing aluminium would be the most suitable material.

I've never had anything machined before - are there any local companies who would likely to be interested in making me such a one-off piece? Is it likely to be economic for me (i.e. small tens of pounds rather than hundreds)?

P.S. I'm assuming it should be CNC machined, but happy for other approaches.

Thanks

Jason

Should be an easy mill/turn job so wouldn't necessarily be CNC. There are plenty of people around Silverstone and brackley that are very good, but they are often there to service F1 teams so might be a bit OTT. Only thing I would say is almost any machinist will want a proper drawing, dimensioned and toleranced, not just you telling them what you want.

Definately not a CNC job, as it wouldn't be worth the set up time for just making one. It's a simple lathe / vertical mill job.

Two recommendations to do it would be EY3 in Wellingborough (ex F1 Fabricators - top quality job) or K & K Engineering in Bletchley MK (really good for one-offs to a high std without much drawing support etc! (just take em the bits and say "make this fit that bit"...... ;-)

Luzzo Bespoke in Brackley are a great bunch of guys...big petrol heads and do bespoke automotive stuff (including some Veyron interior parts from memory).

Last time I was down there they were just off on a Nurburgring mission in their striped and caged E36 M3.

It was Brian or Kevin...but all the guys seem to be good lads.
