I've had enough of open farms, indoor play centres, and 'country' parks - Looking for inspiration on somewhere a bit different in Northants or surrounding areas to take my 4 year old daughter on a weekend...any suggestions?

A little out of the area, but easy to get to - The Think Tank, Birmingham - just taken my two lads there,
it's fab, very hands on and we managed to while-away 5 hours exploring.

Yep, done Wicksteed a few times, she loves it there - can't say I do really, but she seems to enjoy it

Yep, been to Stanwick Lakes too, although not Gullivers Land yet - we were waiting until she's maybe a little bit older and bigger before we go there.

I think the problem is that we've pretty much exhausted most of the popular places round this area...Guess it's not just about going somewhere different but is more about enjoying the time wherever you go, but would be nice to find a new gem of a place to go...

Went a bit further afield last week and went to Cotswold Wildlife Park and loved it - was a great day out

I know what you mean. I think the kids are happy wherever you take them as long as there's space to run around, its us parents who need a change of scene !

My usual places to visit with our three boys (10,9 and 4) are Irchester, Stanwick, Brixworth/Pitsford, Salcey Forest, Sywell (reservoir and aerodrome), Abington Park, Stoke Bruerne, Northampton/Lamport railway, Barnwell (Oundle) or anywhere along the Nene for a walk. Have never been to Wickstead, don't fancy it for some reason. Have you ever been to Milton Keynes Tree Cathedral ?

Gullivers is good for 4 year olds, good value IMO.

Agreed, it suits smaller children rather than the older ones.

Those are usually the places we end up at - Funnily enough we did the Northampton/Lamport railway a few weeks back but was really disappointed with it - didn't realise you don't actually get to Lamport, but rather just go a few hundred yards up the track, then back again, then repeat. And paid £12 for the privilege. Thought we were just going back to let another train through!

Never heard of the Tree Cathedral, may have to look it up, and also maybe try Gullivers Land after the recommendations on here...

Ha ha. Yes its a short ride. I think we only did it once. Now we just take the bikes and go for a cycle up the Brampton Way and look at the trains from there. There's not a lot at the Tree Cathedral other than trees, but it is quite pretty depending on the time of year.

Mate of mine used to live in Fleet and they had an annual pass to Legoland and used to go there very regularly. I was amazed and said along the lines of "dont you fancy a change of scene" but his reply was "we've been to lots of other places but the little one loves Legoland every time we come so we keep coming back".

I guess it's only the parents that need a "change of scene" - if the kids are loving where you go then why change?

Yes, it's not in Northants of course, but Legoland's good for 4-11 year olds if you use Tesco vouchers or similar to get annual passes. Paying £30-40/person for a day ticket is not such a good deal... and take a picnic, the food is expensive.

I wasn't advocating going to Legoland from northants, sorry if my point wasn't clearer.

No, I wasn't criticizing you, and I take the point that going to the same place often doesn't necessarily show a lack of effort/imagination, if the children enjoy it then why not. I just thought I'd point out that the thread is in the Northants section smile

Actually, Northants is half way between us and friends with 3-7 year old children, so I'd like to know if there's anywhere good to meet them for the day.

Half a day canoeing on the river went down well with my son (despite his initial reservations). We used Canoe2 http://www.canoe2.co.uk/ based near Rushden.
